Lotus Block

Jan 17 2003

Lotus Block by Kathleen Pappas

Kathleen Pappas has misplaced one of her five Lotus blocks. Kathleen designed these blocks from a drawing she made from a photograph. Then she fractured the drawing to create her pattern. Each piece required a template and it was a very difficult piecing process.

The missing block was bordered and backed so she could use it as a sample to teach a class based on Ruth McDowell’s “Pieced Flowers” book. It measures 18″ by 24″ with the borders. The actual block is 12″ by 18″. The main colors are greens and pinks. She used many hand dyed fabrics including some from Sky Dyes. It was machine pieced in 1998. The block shown here is not the one that is missing, but it is made from the same templates. The fabrics will vary on the missing block.

Kathleen’s block was last seen in 2000 at a quilt shop in Lake Forest, California. That day, Kathleen had brought home a stack of quilts which should have included this block. She didn’t notice until much later that it was missing. The quilt shop was searched thoroughly to see if it had fallen behind a display or a piece of furniture, but it was not found.

Kathleen writes, “Since it was small and not quilted, perhaps it was picked up or stuck to someone else’s quilt when they took quilts home from the shop.” If you have seen this block, please contact Kathleen through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Dogwood Quilt

Jan 08 2003

Malerie Albretson would like to recover a missing Dogwood Quilt that was made by her mother in 1976. The quilt was lost in 1996 before the K-State Cotton Bowl Game in Wichita, Kansas. It was placed on top of a car and forgotten. The quilt apparently blew off between Webb and Rock Road on 21st Street or in the parking lot at the Bradley Fair.

This twin size quilt was made from a kit that was sold through Herrschners. The main colors are pink, gree and brown on a white background. All of the fabrics are solid colors. It was hand appliqued and hand quilted. It also has some embroidery work around the flowers and leaves.

If you have seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Malerie through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Flora and Fauna Revisited II

Jan 08 2003

Flora ans Fauna Revisted II by Carol Butzke

On January 2, 2003 Flora and Fauna Revisited, an original quilt by Carol Butzke was stolen right off the wall of the Schauer Art Center in Hartford, Wisconsin.

This quilt brings together elements from a variety of 1850′s album quilts. The original of this quilt was made for the 2001 Pilgrim/Roy Challenge and was auctioned as a fund raiser for the Museum of American Quilter’s Society in Paducah, KY. The challenge included twelve quilt artists from around the country who were invited to participate by Gerald Roy. The quilt that was stolen (the second quilt Carol made using this design) was made from the remaining fabric and was part of the artist’s body of work.

The 36″ by 42″ medallion style quilt has a central urn filled with flowers. It is flanked by flying birds and running deer. There are two borders. The first is pieced triangles and squares in red, yellow and blue. The second border is solid black. There is narrow red piping at the binding. It is hand and machine appliqued, machine pieced, and machine quilted. A label is hand appliqued to the lower right corner on the back of the quilt. It is an oval label carried by a flying bird. It includes the quilt’s title, Carol’s name, city, state, and a brief description of the quilt’s provenance. It was made in 2001-2002.

This theft has been reported to the Hartford, Wisconsin Police Department, 262-673-2600. If you have any information regarding this quilt, please contact the Hartford police or contact Carol through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Quilting Among Friends

Nov 14 2002

Pattern designer Linda Everhart was returning from the International Quilt Festival when she received a crushing blow. On November 4, 2002 she stayed the night in a hotel in Dallas, Texas and her van was stolen. The van was later recovered, but the contents of the van, including sixteen quilts were not recovered. Fifteen of the quilts were made by herself and another quilt made by her friend, Amy Bradley. Not pictured are a second “God Bless America” quilt, another sunflower quilt and an angel quilt.

These quilts were the pattern samples for Linda’s entire line of patterns which are sold through Quilting Among Friends. The quilts are made using a fused reverse applique technique called Fusique. The quilts were made in 2001 and 2002. These quilts were also shown on “Simply Quilts” Episode No. 805.

Linda writes, “I also feel that this had nothing to do with the International Quilt Market and Festival that I attended in Houston…I made a mistake by leaving them in the van, and would like to share this information so others do not get hurt this way.”

Linda needs your help in recovering these quilts. A $1,000 reward is being offered for the return of these sixteen quilts. If you have any information that can help Linda, please contact her at amongpals@aol.com.

Around the Pinetree Quilt Top

Oct 25 2002

Round the Pinetree by Carol M. Hesselink

Carol M. Hesselink designed an original Around the World quilt with a Pinetree medallion quilt. The Pinetree medallion is a 12″ square in the center of the quilt top, surrounded by the Around the World pattern. She named the 64″ by 81″ quilt “Around the Pinetree.” She made a matching pillow cover that measures 41″ by 25″. The main colors used are pinks, greens, brown and gold. Some of the fabrics used include a light pink one with roses, a pink and brown paisley, a rose/green/brown print, a pink/gold/brown leaf print, a brown and white print, a dark brown fabric with roses, a dark green print with bees, and a greyish-green print with pink flowers and checks. Carol finished the quilt top in late summer 2002. She used a pigma pen to sign it in the bottom right corner, “cmh2002.”
On September 11, 2002 she set it from Amsterdam, New York. She was sending the quilt top to Sage, Arkansas to be quilted. When the box reached its destination, there was a hole in the box and all that was in the box was the batting that had been sent with the quilt top and its backing (the greyish-green print with pink flowers and checks) and the pillow cover with its backing (a beige with brown dots).
Carol has filed a claim form. However, the value of the quilt top, the pillow top and the backing fabric was more than three times what she insured it for. The claim has not been settled yet. Obviously, Carol would much rather recover her quilt top.
Carol concludes, “I’m not going to let my joy of designing and making this quilt be stolen. I’m trusting our God knows where it is.” If you can help with the recovery of this quilt top, please contact Carol at cmhCreations@bww.com.

Double Wedding Ring Quilt Stolen from Library

Oct 07 2002

On October 3, 2002, between 5:15 PM and 9 PM, a Double Wedding Ring quilt was stolen from the Upper Arlington Public Library in Arlington, Ohio (a suburb of Columbus).

The library has been displaying a different quilt each month for several years with no problems. Each quilt is displayed hanging from a long, wooden, bar-type quilt rack that clamps down on the quilt like a pants hanger, eliminating the need for a sleeve. The rack is located high on the wall of a stairwell landing, leading downstairs to the library departments and meeting rooms. On the day of the theft, a clean-cut woman with streaked or frosted hair walked up to the rack, pulled down the quilt, and walked right out of the library. The casually dressed woman was between 35 and 40 years old. She appeared angry and was moving quickly. The quilt had only been on display a few hours when the theft occured. A witness assumed she was the owner and was unhappy with the way it was being displayed. At the time of the theft there were between fifteen and twenty staff members present in the library and as many as forty patrons.

The quilt is queen-sized, about 84″ wide and somewhat longer in length. The background, bindings and the diamonds at the intersections of the rings are all pure white. The rings are made of brightly colored cotton prints from the 1970′s. The quilt was made by hand in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s. It has an extensive amount of hand quilting including a flower and stem design quilted in the center of each ring. The quilt has never been washed and is like new. This quilt does not have a label.

A police report has been filed on this theft. The quilt owner’s name is being withheld for security reasons. However, if you know anything about the theft of this quilt, please contact Nancy Fogle at nfogle@columbus.rr.com.

Pink and White Sunflower Quilt

Sep 30 2002

Susan Kinderman would like to locate a special family quilt made by Suzanna Halstead Peters. The last known owner was Susan’s relative, Ada Bowers Thomas. The quilt was last seen at a family reunion in Stamford, New York around 1938 or at the home of Ada Thomas in Warners, New York. Susan says, “This quilt did not belong to me. It is however part of our family history. I would like to see it to duplicate.”

This quilt is about 74″ by 89″. It is a pink and white sunflower pattern. Susan believes the pink, white and gray fabrics are from the early 1800′s. She estimates it was made around 1820. The quilt was hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted.

If you have seen a quilt which matches this description, please contact Susan at kinderklaus@yahoo.com.
