Sami’s Log Cabin Quilt

Jul 24 2010

Tabitha Lustig is hoping someone has found the quilt she made for Samantha Casas. The quilt was made in 2008 for Sami’s 18th birthday, and it is the first quilt Tabitha made using free-motion quilting. The quilt was last seen in Henderson, Nevada.

It is a queen-size log cabin quilt, made mostly of black, white, red, orange, and yellow fabrics. The backing is orange flannel. It is machine pieced and machine quilted. Tabitha also quilted suns, moons, and the phrase “I love you Sami” in the quilt. Sami’s step-mother threw the quilt away.

Tabitha writes, “I am hoping that someone, if indeed the quilt was thrown away…by some miracle saved it and may still have it.” If you’ve seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Tabitha at tabitha.lustig@cox.net.

Green and Yellow Quilt by Susan Glenn

Another quilt that was shipped has come up missing. This green and yellow quilt was shipped from Winnemucca, Nevada to Houston, Texas during March 2003. The shipping company driver states the package was left at the door. The recipients were home the entire day, but the driver just signed the reciept and left.

This quilt was a gift from Susan Glenn to her sister, Judy Moorad. It has a label on the lower right corner that says, “To Judy and Bruce, from Susan.” The quilt was custom quilted on a longarm machine with mustard/brown/gold thread. Two of the plain green blocks have butterflies quilted on them.

Pennsylvania Hex

Mar 19 2002

Pennsylvania Hex by Brenda Kalata

Pennsylvania Hex by Brenda Kalata

Can you help Brenda Kalata recover a missing Pennsylvania Hex quilt which she gave to her daughter, Beth Ethridge? The quilt was last seen during the summer of 1994 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was stolen from a parked car. Brenda writes, “While I realize that this quilt has probably been sold and resold many times – in tatters by now – I’d like to know if anyone has seen it since its disappearance.”

This quilt was made from a pattern published in the April 1965 issue of Woman’s Day. The pattern was recreated from a pre-1900 quilt that is owned by the Historical Society of York County, York, Pennsylvania. The quilt top was hand pieced by E. McCarter (who was a New York Bradway costume designer) and was hand quilted by Brenda. The quilt top was given to Brenda on July 8, 1984 and Brenda gave it to her middle daughter as a wedding gift. The top was made around 1966 to 1970 and it was quilted in 1990. It is 72″ by 100″. The main colors are red, yellow and green on a bright white background. The cotton red and yellow, six-pointed blocks are surrounded by pieced diamonds to create hexagons. Traditional “feathered circles” or “feather wreaths” are quilted in every white hexagon.

If you can help, please contact Brenda at brenkal1@yahoo.com.

Marjorie Phillips Quilts

Mar 16 2001

Marjorie Phillips has reported that several quilts which she made for her daugher, Sophia Phillips, and her grandson were stolen. On December 10, 1997 her daughter loaded up a U-Haul truck in Las Vegas, Nevada with all of her possessions including these quilts. The packed van was parked out in front of her house so they could leave early in the morning. During the night a thief hot wired the van and stole everything they owned. After this experience, Marjorie recommends that others remove the coil from the engine compartment of any packed truck if it is left standing, especially if others saw you loading the truck. The van was eventually located, but only odds and ends were left.

The major loss, in terms of quilted items, was a queen sized quilt which she made for her grandson, Bradley. This quilt is called “Bars and Beasts”. It has a matching dust ruffle, a matching smaller TV quilt (second photo) and a pillow. The larger quilt is 95″ by 76″ and was made in 1996. Bradley’s name and birthdate were quilted in the middle of this quilt. The TV quilt is 36″ by 36″. The colors of both of these quilts are strong primary colors and both are hand quilted.

Another quilt that was stolen was a Modified Nine Patch (a Trudi Hughes design). This is a large double bed size quilt and was a birthday gift for Sophia’s 25th birthday. It is a machine pieced, scrappy quilt with a very high loft batting.

There was also a 34″ by 34″ wall hanging which was made for a quilt challenge in 1990 and it won an honorable mention. The challenge was to use a dark, striped fabric. Marjorie made this quilt with nine pinwheel blocks in a spool setting. It is machine pieced and hand quilted. All quilts were labeled.

The best part of this whole experience was that Marjorie had documented her quilts, complete with photos, sizes, and other background information. This was invaluable to her for insurance purposes. Naturally, they would much rather retreive the quilts. If you can help, please contact Marjorie at Quiltermp@aol.com
