Quilt found after May 2011 tornado

Umbrella GirlThis quilt was found in Piedmont, Oklahoma after the area was hit by a deadly tornado in May 2011. It was discovered in a field two months after teh storm, but the owner has not yet been found. It has a label that says “Made Especially for you by Grammie” along with the date Nov. 1999.

The quilt features a traditional quilt block that is sometimes called “Umbrella Girl.” This quilt has twenty appliqued and embroidered ladies, each holding a parasol. Each one is embroidered with a name. Names include Bettina, Sarah, Hannah, Heather, Ashley, Allie, Amanda, Stephanie, Michelle, Leah, Cristy, Kristi, and possibly Jehan (?) and Morissa (?). It has mint green sashing and backing.

This is currently in safekeeping at the Piedmont Service Center until the family can be found. The original news story by Jamie Oberg can be read on News9.com.

Bobbie Lamaere found this green and gold quilt at the Savers Store in Duluth, Minnesota. She purchased in in early 2010. It is approximately 73″ square. This quilt, which was made in 2005, is machine pieced and machine quilted. The border fabric is a large scale rose print on a gold background. It has a label written in green ink which says, “To Grandma Betty (heart) Laura Jo.”

Luther Carter Quilt

Sandy Mayberry has a quilt dated 1909 with the name "Luther Carter" embroidered on it. She bought it at the Nashville Antique and Flea Market several years ago, but she would like to locate the ancestors of Mr. Carter. If someone can identify it, she would be happy to return it to the family for the price she paid for it.

North Carolina Quilt

On Sunday, June 21, 2009, someone found a quilt on the westbound lane of Highway 64 near Tarboro, North Carolina. The quilt was wrapped in one of those plastic blanket packages. The quilt appears to be newly made, in wonderful condition. It is hand and machine quilting. There is no label attached and they cannot find a signature.

The person who found this quilt wants to return it to its owner, as she is a needle worker, and says she would be sick if she lost one of her works. If this might be your quilt, please email mom4matkat@embarqmail.com.

This quilt was found over 20 years ago. They attempted to locate the owners, but never did. It was forgotten about it until recently and now they are attempting to once again find the owners. The quilt is located in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Intricately Pieced Quilt Top

Jeanne Stickler Takano is searching for the maker of a beautiful, intricately pieced quilt top that was left in her care. None of the local guild directories have her name; none of many acquaintances who piece and/or quilt recognize the artist’s name–not even those who also knew the former quilter. Jeanne cannot find a phone number or address (even through vigorous Googling and Yahooing) for the name provided when this work of art was left in her (supposedly) temporary care. Jeanne suspects the quilt top has been out of the artist’s hands for at least 5 years–maybe more–the top and backing have been in her hands for about 2 years.

The quilt top maker gave the top to a quilter in Dallas, Texas. The quilter stopped quilting, moved out of state, and we have lost contact. Before she left, she left this quilt top in my care, with plans for her to return it to the owner. The quilt top is approximately 84" by 94". It is lively, almost primitive gestalt. It has scrappy 1/2" wide piano keys which form sashing. Spring green cornerstones enclose 7-1/2" blocks of 5 concentric squares. All central squares are black, graced by a star embroidered in Perle cotton. There are three borders: black, piano keys, then black. The backing with quilt top is black with green overall geometric design.

Dresden Plate Baby Quilt

In 1998, Debra Roberts found a crib-size, Dresden-style baby quilt in Catoosa, Oklahoma in the Catoosa School’s football parking lot after a game. At the time she contacted the daycare that was across the street from the school, but no one recognized it. She also left word at the school’s administration office but, again, no one claimed it. The quilt was even left on the fence next to the parking lot for a day after it was found. Debra rescued it when the grounds crew was going to throw it away. The quilt was stained and had some minor tears. Debra has always hoped that somehow the rightful owner could be found.
This quilt is 43" by 56" and has twelve 11" squares. It has a white background and uses pink and blue flower-printed fabrics that are the same print but just different colors. It has white edging, pink borders and sashing, and blue cornerstones.

Two British Columbia Quilts

Tabi has found two quilts in a barrel wrapped in plastic in Chemainus, British Columbus on Vancouver Island. She is hoping to return them to their rightful owner. The quilts are currently at the local police station and a picture was run in the local paper.

She thinks these are Mennonite quilts. One is blue and white squares. There are women’s names and embroidered flowers in the white squares, along with a psalm. The second quilt is light blue and white. It is also embroidered with women’s names and flowers/birds in the white squares. Unfortunately, it is difficult to read most of the names.

Carol Stroud purchased this quilt top on Ebay. The seller said she got it at a church rummage sale in Arizona. It was signed and Carol hated to see it go to waste. She purchased in and has given it a nice home, but she would love to return it if any of the families are interested in getting it back. Carol feels like if it had been her mother who made one of the blocks, that she would love having it back in her own family.

The quilt is made of twenty 14" squares with appliqued butterflies. All of the blocks are signed. The names include Pruitt, Hendrix, Carpenter, McEven, Ray, and Carter.
