Red Flower Quilt

Aug 20 2002

Lee Nordin would like to find an original quilt that was made by her mother. The full, bedspread-sized, linen quilt was made in Ireland. The quilt has a large red flower in the center. Each piece was outlined with buttonhole stitch using embroidery thread. This quilt was hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted. It was made around 1948-1952. It was last seen in Ireland when it was shipped to Washington, DC. It could not be found when Lee’s aunt died. She may have given it away at some point.

Lee writes, “I would give anything to find it as I collected all the pieces for it and she won awards at the fair…” If you can help, please contact Lee at 11158@aol.com.

Iris

Iris Sketch by Susan Madden

Iris Sketch by Susan Madden

An original quilt by Susan Madden was stolen from the American Heritage Quilt Show on July 31, 2002. The show was being held at the Wellsville Tabernacle in Wellsville, Utah. It was discovered missing by one of the hostesses in the morning. It had won a third place ribbon at the show which ran from July 26 to August 3. Whoever stole Susan’s quilt took the ribbon off of it and pinned the ribbon on the quilt beneath hers.

Susan made the original quilt in 2002. It is about 13″ by 20″. Her sketch for the quilt is shown above. It is appliqued irises over a machine quilted landscape. The iris are purple, fuscia and white with green leaves. (See inset of scanned iris fabric.)

The irises are appliqued against a light gray background with a dark olive green border. The background has machine quilted landscape forms: clouds, hills in the distance, willow leaves in the upper left corner, and a stippled sky. It was quilted with a matching gray thread. The border on the left was quilted in a wave pattern running vertically. The fabric used on the back of the quilt has flowers and hummingbirds.

Middle Eastern Quilt

Apr 18 2002

Estelle Guizar has acquired a quilt which she believes may be a family heirloom. It was found in Gilroy, California. The quilt seems to have Middle Eastern influence.
It is about 72" by 96". The colors range from darks to pastels. The focal point looks like Chinese checkers framed by eternity symbols and script. The center of the quilt has a six-petal, yellow flower with an embroidered green center. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted. Estelle estimates it was made about 15-25 years ago. The quilt also has a label with Middle Eastern script.

Found Crazy Quilt

Charlene Sabin recently purchased a partially finished Victorian crazy quilt from an antique store in Portland, Oregon. Since it includes some personal momentos and identifying initials, she is interested in possibly finding the family who made it.

Because the quilt includes a ribbon that says "Peebles Schools" she suspects it came from Ohio. There is the name "ELLA" on one part as well as initials in other areas of the quilt. There is a small embroidered flag. The center of the quilt is pieced with small triangles and is different from the other squares. Some of the quilt top is in poor condition, but the backing is in good condition and has brown flowers.

For more information, please contact Charlene at

Colours of St. Lucia

Colours of St. Lucia by Ann Sullivan Densleigh

Colours of St. Lucia by Ann Sullivan Densleigh

Densleigh (Dennie) Anne Sullivan created this original quilt, Colors of St. Lucia, using a variety of tropical prints in aqua, teal, turquoise, peach and coral. She strip-pieced the fabrics and cut them into squares and circles similar to the traditional Drunkard’s Patch block. She embellished the quilt with thread painting, beading, and bridal tulle layered to create the sea coral. There are three-dimensional flowers and manipulated fabric for the palm trees. The finished size of this machine pieced, machine quilted, fabric art is 50″ by 50″.

There are two labels on this quilt. One is Dennie’s own decorative, descriptive label. The second had Dennie’s full name, address, and phone number. It is computer generated with waterproof ink and sewn on with tiny hand stitching.

In March 2001 this quilt won second place at the Arizona State Guild Show. It was also juried into a fibre art show at the Lincoln Gallery, Ft. Collins, Colorado for the month of July 2001.

Dennie’s quilt was featured in Louisa L. Smith’s book, “Strips ‘n Curves,” which was published by C&T Publications in November 2001. (There were two errors made when the book was printed. In the index, the quilt was incorrectly listed as being made by author of the book. They also incorrectly spelled the title using the American spelling of “colors” instead of the British version, “colours.”)

This quilt was last seen on August 28, 2001 when the author, Louisa L. Smith, sent it from Loveland, Colorado to Sun Lakes, Arizona.

If you have any information regarding this quilt, please contact Dennie at rdsully@worldnet.att.net.

Clarice Noll Quilts

Jan 25 2002

In June 2001, Clarice Noll had four quilts stolen from a storage area in her home. Also stolen were antiques, braided rugs and glassware. Most of these items were reported to have been taken to Maryland and sold at auction.

The Log Cabin quilt is about 90″ square and has four large hearts in the center. The main colors are maroon, gray, reds and blacks. It was made from shirt factory excess sleeve facings. This quilt, made around 1978, is machine pieced and hand quilted. This quilt was made with a cotton batting and is quilted very closely. It also has a prairie point border. This quilt does not have a label.

A Grandmother’s Flower Garden was also stolen. It is double bed size. The middle circles of the flowers are made of prints and are surrounded by coordinating solid colors. There are white paths between the flowers. The edge of the quilt was finished off by turning under the hexagon edges. This quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted. It was made about 1995.

A third quilt that was stolen is a Star and Pinwheel design. This double bed size quilt was made with whites, natural muslin and various prints. The backing is lavendar with several pieced blocks. It is machine pieced and hand quilted in 1997. This quilt was on a bed in Clarice’s house when it was stolen.

There was also a double bed size, hand embroidered quilt with print sashing. This quilt was mainly melon and maroon on white. It was a purchased kit quilt that was begun in 1968 by Marion Spicher. Clarice finished it about 1990. This quilt was labeld on the back with embroidery. The label text includes both of their names and “for Ashley Dawn Kitko.”

If you can help locate any of these quilts, please contact Clarice at tcnoll@pennswoods.net.

Jewel Tone Round Robin

Jan 08 2002

In the Spring of 1995 Shelley A. Brooks sent her Jewel Tone Round Robin Quilt in a box with a dozen other quilts to a quilt show in Florida. When her friend arrived at the quilt show, the box containing the quilts was opened and Shelley’s quilt was missing.

The quilt was made using a variety of techniques including hand applique, machine applique, machine piecing and machine quilting. It is approximately 45″ square. The main block was appliqued flowers in a somewhat modern design. The background is black and other colors included plums, turquoise, green, and cobalt blue. A label was had sewn on the black including her name, the year, the name of the quilt and “Virginia Beach, VA.” The label is either a crazy patch design using some of the fabrics from the design or it is made using Pigma© pens.

Shelley says, “I would love to get it back. No questions asked…” Please contact Shelley with any information, brookquilt@aol.com.

Flower Basket Quilt

Nov 28 2001

Flower Basket by Kathleen Slabodnik

Flower Basket by Kathleen Slabodnik

Mary M. Marty is looking for a quilt that was made by her mother, Kathleen Slabodnik. The flower basket quilt was last seen on August 19, 1993 when it was dropped off at Ellen’s of Ely, a quilt and fabric store, so it could be exhibited in a quilt show. The quilt never made it to the show. Mary suspects the quilt may still be in the Ely, Minnesota area or it may have been taken to the Washington state area.

This quilt fits a full size bed. It is made of blue florals and solid blue on a white background. It was machine pieced and hand quilted in 1985. A label sewn onto the back says, “Hand made by Kathleen Slabodnik.”

Mary says, “My mom puts her heart into her quilts, so this took quite a toll on her…I would love to see this one restored to my mom after all these years.” If you can help reunite this quilt with its proper owner, please contact Mary at jandmmarty@msn.com.
