Burgundy Quilt

Dec 20 2005

Deborah Salguero is hoping to recover a quilt she made for her daughter Cristina. It was last seen in August 2005 at a boarding school in Massachusetts. It was taken from her daughter by the school nurse for safe keeping. It is possible it was placed in a black trash bag and accidentally thrown away.

The twin size quilt is mainly burgundy with trees. It has light green with chickens and dogs, a beige check and a dark blue check. It also has a fabric with sunflowers. There is a label that says, “Dear Cristina, with all my love, Mama, June 2005.” This was embroidered directly onto the quilt in the top left hand corner. Deborah used a commercial pattern from “The Block Library”, page 88.

Please contact Deborah through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page if you find a quilt that fits this description.

Mainland Flowers by Bonnie Belshe

On August 26, 2005 this quilt, along with other personal belongs, was stolen from a rental van. The van was parked outside a hotel in Des Plaines, Illinois.

This quilt was made by Bonnie Belshe and is owned by Ann Kennedy. It is queen size, about 92″ by 106″ and was made in 1993. It has brown on white, Hawaiian floral style blocks. Each block is a unique floral design. It is hand appliqued, hand pieced and hand quilted.

The owner believes the quilt has a label with the maker’s name and date stitched in a circular patter in one of the back corners. This quilt received a prestigious award and might be recognized by quilt experts.

Missing Estate Quilts

Sep 08 2005

Ann Rutherford-Berthiaume is hoping to recover some quilts that were sold against her wishes at an auction at 211 University Ave., Waxahachie, TX on July 30, 2005. The auctioneer was Larry Schaefer.

These quilts were her grandmother’s, her great-grandmother’s, and possible her great-great-grandmother’s. There were 20-21 sold at the auction. She had asked for photos of all the quilts but only received about one-fifth of them. She was able to purchase the ones she knew about, but was never told about the twenty or more others. She basically has one generation and is missing the other two generations.

Patterns of the auctioned quilts are a crazy quilt made of silks with embroidery which is believed to be made by her great-grandmother, a log cabin quilt, bowtie, nine patch, etc. See photo of the auction quilts below. The crazy quilt was sold to a lady from Midlothian, TX. Obviously she will not be able to buy back all the quilts but would like the buyers to contact her.

She is also looking for some quilts that were taken from her grandmother’s residence in the late 1980′s when her grandmother was ill. The family realized these were missing when the estate was being settled. There was a double wedding ring, a grandmother’s flower garden, and a cathedral window. The double wedding ring had never been used and was made of cottons, hand-pieced and hand-quilted. It is believed it was made in the late 1930′s or 1940′s.

If you have any information about these quilts, please contact Ann at [email protected].

New York Beauty / Irish Chain

Jun 16 2005

Sketch of quilt

In 1997, Darcy Pattison went to Fraser, Colorado for a skiing vacation. She brought a quilt with her to work on, but it got lost somewhere in Fraser or during her trip back to Little Rock, Arkansas. The quilt is unfinished, only partially quilted. It was in a pillowcase when she last saw it.

The double bed sized quilt is an original design where the blocks are set diagonally. In the center are two large New York Beauty blocks. They are set together with an Irish Chain variation. In the two opposing corners are blocks of appliqued flowers. The border has an appliqued scallop. The main colors are burgundy, pink, tan, and a paisley print. It is machine pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. It also has buttons and embroidery on the appliqued blocks.

Fabrics used

Recovered! Abide With Me

Apr 04 2005

Abide With Me

On February 22-25, 2006 Laura Fisher had some antique quilts on display at Heart of Country Antiques Show in Nashville. They were in the center aisle in the special friendship quilt exhibition, near the Country Home Magazine display booth. One quilt, however, was not shipped back to Laura with the other quilts that were on display.

The investigation into its disappearance began and after backtracking through all the events of the pack out and contacting everyone, it was discovered that it had been mistakenly sent off to storage elsewhere. So thankfully, the missing quilt has now been returned to its rightful owner!

Abide With Me, detail

This circa 1880s quilt is unique. The format is four large eight-point stars framing a central squarish panel. The phrases “Good Morning” and “Good Night” are embroidered here. The stars appear only as outline embroidery now, because most of the silk piecing has disintegrated. The Victorian quilt is filled with words and sentimental phrases, all of which are clear and distinct. Most of the piecing is gone; little bits are visible throughout the quilt. Most of the embroidery is in red thread, with yellow accents in flowers and other Victorian stitchery motifs.
