Lois Walron would like to recover a Race Car Quilt that she made for her first grandson. The crib-size quilt was last seen during the Summer of 2001. Her daughter-in-law brought it with her on car trips to the park. It may have been taken from the park when she was distracted.

The race cars squares are on point and alternate with nine-patch squares. It’s very colorful, made with bright red, yellow, blue, purple and green. The nine-patch connecting squares are black and white to resemble the race flag. It was machine pieced and hand quilted in 2000.

Flag Quilt

Apr 02 2004

When Mrs. Mary Leppington was reading Mary Conroy’s book, “300 Years of Canadian Quilts,” (1976) she came across a quilt that had been made by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lars Petersen. The quilt had become part of the collection of the New Westminster Museum in 1980, but when Mrs. Leppington asked about it, they knew nothing about it. Now Mrs. Leppington is trying to solve the mystery surrounding this quilt.

The quilt was made with flannelette flags collected from tobacco tins from around 1900 to 1914. The overall size of the quilt is 85″ by 75″. It has many colors, but they have faded to mostly browns and reds. The quilt was filled with raw silk collected when a CNR silk train derailed on the Fraser River, British Columbia in 1927. The border was made with strips of pink cotton.

If you can help solve the mystery, please contact Mary through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Found Crazy Quilt

Found Crazy Quilt

Found Crazy Quilt

Charlene Sabin recently purchased a partially finished Victorian crazy quilt from an antique store in Portland, Oregon. Since it includes some personal momentos and identifying initials, she is interested in possibly finding the family who made it.

Because the quilt includes a ribbon that says "Peebles Schools" she suspects it came from Ohio. There is the name "ELLA" on one part as well as initials in other areas of the quilt. There is a small embroidered flag. The center of the quilt is pieced with small triangles and is different from the other squares. Some of the quilt top is in poor condition, but the backing is in good condition and has brown flowers.

For more information, please contact Charlene at

While their owner was serving aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise in the Persian Gulf, two quilts were stolen from his apartment in Norfolk, Virginia. The quilts were made by Marcia Gilbreath. These quilts were stolen sometime between April 2001 and December 2001.

Flag Appreciation, back

Flag Appreciation, back

Flag Appreciation, shown above, is a queen-sized, red, white and blue quilt. The border was done by fusing water color squares to create a random pattern. The backing, shown below, is blue with off-white stars. This quilt is machine pieced and machine quilted. The label includes the maker’s name, Marcia Gilbreath; the recipient’s name, Christopher S. Gilbreath; the year, 2000; and the phrase “Serving his country aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.” The label was hand appliqued and machine quilted down.

Denim Quilt by Marcia Gilbreath

Red and Beige Hawaiian Applique Quilt

Jun 22 2001

Kay Ordonio-Carter is searching for a Hawaiian applique quilt made by her great-grandmother. The last time she saw the quilt was in Long Beach, California in approximately 1956 to 1959 when she was a young girl. Her mother took it to the cleaners and when she went to pick it up, they told her they lost it.

She remembers that the top of the quilt was red and beige or possible red and light yellow. The back side of the quilt was a red, white and blue Hawaiian flag. All of the fabrics were solids colors, not prints, and it was hand appliqued and hand quilted. It is an orignial quilt design and it is full size. It was made in Hawaii around 1934 when her mother, Sarah Kealiiaupunahou Kane Kimona (Cabral), was born.

The quilt was supposed to be passed on to Kay. Her great-grandmother had made nine quilts for each of her nine grandchildren. All of the quilts were designed after Hawaiian island flowers with the Hawaiian flag on the reverse.

Kay writes, “I know this is a long shot, but the people who have this quilt know that it is not their quilt…At first I was upset that it was stolen and then I realized that there are other people who have had their quilts stolen also…That is why I label all my quilts and put the person whom I’m giving it to, their name and date.”

If you recognize the description of this quilt, please contact Kay at [email protected].

Harriet Carpenter Quilt

Aug 17 2000

Harriet Carpenter Quilt

Mary Jo Scott is searching for her great-great-grandmothers quilt which was sold at the Womans Club Thrift Shop in State College, Pennsylvania around 1972.

The quilt is supposed to be a flag pattern, having one very large American flag on it with a blue background. It may be similar to the pictures to the right. The quilting is superb and it has ornate embroidery saying “Made and presented to JCH by Grandma Carpenter” and the date. The date is probably between 1895 and 1900.

Mary Jo says, “The most important clue I have about the missing quilt is that I am sure it will have the beautiful embroidery with initials JCH. It is possible that it is not the flag pattern. My cousin who saw it as a child thinks it was a flag.”

This quilt is believed to be the twin to the one above. It is featured in Patricia Herrs new book, “Quilting Traditions.” Mary Jo owns this quilt. She was told about the missing quilt by her 82-year-old cousin who described it to her. She knows that her great-great grandmother did make duplicates of some of her other non-traditional patterns. About twenty heirloom quilts by this woman have been documented, and most are different patterns.

If you know of a quilt that meets this description, please contact Mary Jo Scott at [email protected].
