African Rock Quilts
Dena Crain donated two quilts to the Trust for African Rock Art (http://www.africanrockart.org). The quilts were part of a traveling exhibition of African rock art. The car they were being transported in was involved a car crash on the road between Nairobi, Kenya, and either Arusha or Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. By the time the confusion cleared, the quilts were gone. These quilts were last seen sometime in 2005 or early 2006.
This quilt is named "Le Grand Dieu." The art quilt is based on a photograph of African rock art (used with permission) from the book, "African Rock Art," by David Coulson and Alex Campbell. This quilt is 35" high by 72" long. The main colors are oranges and greys. The quilt incorporates is a fine netting with gold metallic painted gluespots as well as hand dyed and hand painted fabrics. The backgroud is quilted with variegated threads. This quilt has a label with Dena's name sewn to the back, bottom right corner.
This quilt is called "Les Girafes." It is a whole-cloth quilt that is stenciled, hand dyed, and hand painted. The giraffes have a higher loft due to trapunto. It is machine quilted with variegated rayon and metallic threads. This 35" high by 72" quilt has a label on the back and the title, "Les Girafes," might be spelled with two f's instead of one.
Dena writes, "I know it's a long shot, but I'm hoping whoever has them will try to sell them up through the market and they may eventually reappear." If you find these quilts, please contact Dena through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.
