Patchwork Flowers

Jan 17 2005

Ginger Hug by Karen Hood

Ginger Hug by Karen Hood

In 2004 Karen Hood made a quilt for Ginger White Maxwell. The 50″ by 60″ has multi-color, patchwork flower blocks and a large applique basket. The blocks are set on point. An antique red, white and blue floral toweling is used for the side triangles. It is machine appliqued, machine pieced and machine quilted.

The quilt was last seen in November 2004 in Embarrass, Minnesota. The quilter who had shipped it has placed a tracer with the shipping company. She had to wait thirty days before placing the tracer and was told that it could take another thirty days or more before it was acted upon.

Please contact Karen through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page if you can help with the recovery of this quilt.

Ribbon Log Cabin

Nov 10 2004

In December 1996 a Ribbon Log Cabin quilt was lost by a shipping company while being sent from Leesburg or Travies, Florida to Berlin, New Jersey. Somehow it was never delivered and the tracking number was lost. The problem was compounded because the person receiving the quilt did not know it was being sent because it was a Christmas gift. Several months went by before it was discovered missing.

The scrappy quilt was made entirely of grosgrain ribbon in 1950. It was hand pieced and hand quilted and heavily embroidered like a crazy quilt might be. The quilt fit a double bed with a scalloped drop of approximately 8″. The quilt was made by Maude S. Hager and is owned by Laura B. Pinchick. Maude, Alyce’s grandmother, worked in a ribbon factory and she gave this quilt to Alyce’s cousin as a wedding gift. The cousin then gave it to Alyce’s sister for her wedding.

If you’ve seen a quilt similar to this, please contact Alyce through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Yellow and Blue Nine Patch

Sep 07 2004

During September or October 2003, a shipping company lost a quilt belonging to Eleanor McCain. She shipped it from Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The shipping company later told her the quilt must have fallen out of the box and was lost in transit to Larence, Kansas.

The 110″ by 110" quilt is a nine patch quilt. Yellow and blue crosses alternate wtih black and white striped squares. The fabrics are hand-dyed. It is machine pieced and machine quilted. Eleanor is not sure if she labeled the quilt before it was shipped, but if it was, she typically machine sews the label to the lower right corner of the backing.

If you’ve seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Eleanor at [email protected].

Recovered! Amy’s Quilt

Feb 26 2004

Amy's Quilt by Kathryn Henry

A $500 reward was offered for the return of Amy’s Quilt, made by Kathryn Henry. The quilt had been sent via a shipping company on December 16, 2003. It was left by the shipping company on Erin Brisben’s porch in Clackamas, Oregon on December 22, 2003 where it was stolen after the shipping company left it. A police report was filed. In February 2004, after five weeks of being missing, the quilt was turned in to the Sheriff’s Office for the reward money.

Amy’s sister Erin and Erin’s housemate spent considerable time and effort posting reward fliers, which apparently enticed the thief to return the quilt. As an added bonus, in the midst of looking for this missing quilt, another log cabin quilt made for another Amy was recovered!

Kathryn writes, “I cried and cried over the theft of the quilt, then cried again when it was recovered. I had started writing a book about the quilt, worked on it for the five weeks that the quilt was missing, and now intend to go ahead and finish it. The real-life ending turned out to be happier than the one I was imagining in my fiction.” Kathryn also highly praised the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Department for their help in the recovery.

The quilt was made by Kathryn Henry for Amy Brisben. It features a house and building blocks with log cabin blocks and a blue/tan sawtooth border. It is about 80″ square. The center of the quilt includes the words “for Amy” machine quilted into it. Several of the houses have dogs and cats in the windows. The log cabin blocks include many fabrics with dogs, cats, birds and butterflies. It is machine pieced and machine quilted.
