Three Quilts Destroyed in Tragic Truck Fire!

Aug 17 2001

Aunt Joe's Rose Basket by Sharon Schumber

Three wonderful quilts were destroyed in a shipping company truck fire on July 30, 2001. All three of these quilts were award winners at the 2001 Minnesota Quilt Show in Duluth, Minnesota. All three were on their way to Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine to be photographed for an upcoming issue. Although exact details of how the fire got started are sketchy, it appears a mechanical problem started a fire under the cargo area of the truck.

“Aunt Joe’s Rose Basket” is made by Sharon Schumber of Jensen, Utah. Sharon made this quilt to showcase her applique techniques. It was made in memory of her Aunt Joe who taught her to sew as a child. She plans to eventually recreate “Aunt Joe’s Rose Basket” with some modifications.

Emerald Reflections by Sharon Schumber

“Emerald Reflections,” (right) also made by Sharon Schumber, was a Judge’s Choice winner and won the Guard’s Choice ribbon. This quilt was shown at the Indiana Heritage Show in March 2001 where it won the Viewer’s Choice award. The prize for that award was an Elna Quilter’s Dream sewing machine. Since the fire, Sharon made a duplicate of this quilt, named “Memories of Emerald Reflections,” which has been a winning entry in many large shows.

Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding between the Schambers and Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, these quilts were not insured when they were shipped. As a result, the shipping company only paid the minimum amount of $100 despite the fact that the two quilts were valued in excess of $8,000 and represented 4,000 to 5,000 hours of work. Gene and Sharon Schamber wrote, “This is just a warning…YOU MUST MAKE SURE IT (the quilt you ship) IS INSURED FOR THE FULL VALUE…” and they signed their letter “Gene and Sharon crying in Utah.”

Believe by Deb Folz

“Believe,” owned by Deb Folz of Hudson, Wisconsin was a round robin quilt. Deb and five friends created this quilt. “Believe” won third place in the group category. This quilt was 76″ by 72″. Other than the center block, this quilt was made of original designs. Deb Folz made the center using a Jeanna Kimball pattern. Mary Wiebusch paper pieced the triangles. Denise Vokoun did the fabric painting, including the heron, and appliqued. Terri Kaylor did the double, on-point border. Jeanette Dilts did the curved piecing. Cheri Gott-Hand finished up the quilt and had the heron added. Deb added the tree, leaves, rocks, and cattails along the bottom after the round robin was done. Carolyn Peters did the quilting.

When Deb was first told about the fire, she was told that the quilt was nothing more than ashes and the contents of the truck had been dumped in the garbage. However, Deb requested the shipping company to recover the remains of the quilt, no matter how small. She also asked Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine to get the shipping company to recover her quilt. After several requests, and three days after the fire, they found the pillowcase containing the quilt, still with Deb’s name and phone number on it. The damaged quilt will be returned to Deb.

Deb encourages, “Don’t give up! If there is any shread of hope in a recover…keep hounding, from more than one direction. Call or write everyone you can come up with.” Deb adds, “My heart is bleeding for Sharon Schamber. I was really feeling sorry for myself till I heard about her loss. I lost nothing compared to what she lost.”

Ohio Rose Miniature Quilt

May 03 2001

Ohio Rose by Debbie Miller

Please be on the look out for this miniature Ohio Rose Quilt which was stolen from Kalona Kountry Kreations in Kalona, Iowa. Debbie Miller had the quilt on display at this quilt store and it was for sale. One morning in 1995 two ladies came in the store and the quilt was taken down from the wall so they could look at it up close. After they were finished the quilt was put back up on the wall. Later in the day it was discovered that the quilt was missing.

This cream, green and burgundy quilt is 18″ by 18". Fabrics used are shown below. Debbie used a pattern published by Needleart Guild of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She followed the pattern for the quilting blocks but when she got to the border she changed the quilting pattern. It is hand appliqued, machine pieced and hand quilted. Debbie doesn’t remember if she wrote her name on the back.

If you can help, please contact Debbie at [email protected].

Sorority Quilt

Sep 29 2000

Shannon Johnson made a special quilt for her sorority sisters daughter for the daughters college graduation. The daughter had been spending the summer in Washington DC, so Shannon sent it to her home in Mason City, Iowa so she wouldnt have to carry it home with her on the airplane. When her mother received it, however, she decided to forward it to her daughter. Unfortunately the mother wrote the wrong address on the package and the daughter never received the quilt.

Naturally Shannon is heartbroken and needs help finding this quilt. The quilt is made with their sorority colors: red, buff (yellow), and green and she included pictures of their college times on the quilt. In the center is a large picture of their entire sorority with “Alpha Gamma Delta” machine embroidered in an arc over the top. The photos are all done by photo transfer technique. The quilt also features the names of six members of their family tree: Jean, Lori, Shannon, Karin, Jennifer, and Amy. In the corners are two squirrels, a red rose and a yellow rose. The fabrics are mostly prints with solid color muslin behind the pictures. The back of the quilt is red marbled fabric and it is tied with yarn. It is about 54″ by 66″.

This quilt was lost sometime during the summer of 1998. If you know anything about this quilt, please contact Shannon at [email protected].

Tallman Family Quilt

Aug 17 2000

Tallman Family Quilt

Barbara Heine is searching for her great-great grandmothers quilt that was auctioned off.

It was auctioned on June 19, 1993 by Julia-Poulin Antiques in Fairfield, Maine. It was from the estate of James Smith of Showhegan, Maine. It was either purchased by a Margaret Smith of North Anson, Maine or a man from Portland, Maine. It is possible that one of them owns an antique store.

The quilt has bright red sashing with pink, gold, and black or brown. The quilt bears the names of the Tallman children, signed in black ink in the center of random squares. Not all of the squares are signed. Signatures would include Elizabeth, Henrietta, Tunis, Ambrose, Samuel, Rosa and Ulysses. The quilt was made around 1847. Barbara believes the quilt was made by Elizabeths mother (Barbaras great-great grandmother), but she doesnt have her name yet.

Barbara and other family members are doing what they can to find this quilt. If you have any information regarding this quilt, please contact Barbara Heine at [email protected].

Beatrix Potter Baby Quilt

Jan 19 2000

Priscilla Wilbur still misses the Beatrix Potter baby quilt that was inside a piece of luggage that was stolen from the Seattle-Tacoma airport in November 1985. She holds onto the slim hope that this quilt is still out there somewhere.

The crib-size quilt was made for her daughter. She embroidered each square with a Beatrix Potter character including Jeremy Fisher, Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddleduck, Benjamin Bunny, the Two Bad Mice, Mrs. Tiggy Winkle, as well as others. The quilt is a tufted quilt with alternating squares of baby pink and triangles of blue rosebud calico. This was the first quilt she had ever made.

If you know anything about this quilt, please contact Priscilla at [email protected].

Stars Over the Georgetown Patch

Oct 06 1999

Stars Over the Georgetown Path by Lela Hadraval

This prize winning quilt, called Stars Over the Georgetown Path, was pieced and hand quilted by Lela Hadrava. It was stolen on September 15, 1999 after it was dropped off for the Eastern Iowa Heirloom Quilt Show which was held at the Teamsters Hall, 5000 J Street, SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The theft was discovered on the morning of September 16 when it could not be found for judging.

The quilt is 94″ by 104″. There are six different fabrics: a floral Hoffman print that has rose and purple raspberries with a black background, two shades of rose fabric, two shades of green fabric, and a cream and gold background fabric. A label is sewn on the back.

Lela was the “featured quilter” this year at her guild show. The picture shown above was taken at the 1999 Dyersville, Iowa quilt show where it won a “Best of Show” award.

If you have any information on the location of this quilt, please contact Nan Fowler at [email protected].
