“PaPa’s Quilt” is a queen size quilt that was made by a friend from scraps of Linda’s father’s pajamas and shirts. Her dad’s catch phrase, “I’m still here,” is embroidered at the bottom. The back and edges are navy blue.

Obama Inauguration Scarf and Tunic

Feb 03 2009

Michele Hardman is hoping to recover a scarf and tunic/poncho which she commissioned Susan Shie to create for the Obama Inauguration. They were last seen on January 29, 2009 when they were checked in at Customs Hall at the O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, transferring to Austin, Texas on American Airlines, Flight # AA2293. She was charged extra because the bag is oversized and overweight. At the time she was told that if the bag was not on her flight that it would be on the next flight. However, it didn’t arrive on either flight.

A missing luggage report has been filed, both with the Austin airport authorities as well as the Chicago O’Hare authorities. The missing bag is a black, oversized duffle bag with roller wheels on one end. Michele was told that if the luggage was not retrieved within five days, all unclaimed bags would go to a central baggage area in Dallas.

The scarf (sections shown above left) is about 6-8 ft long and about 1 ft wide. The rectangular tunic/poncho (front and back shown to right) is about 3 ft by 5 ft. The main colors are Democratic blue and yellow, which blend into green, along with black outlines. The scarf and tunic are airbrush painted. They were made in January 2009. They are signed by Susan Shie directly on each piece with paint.

Earlier in a separate incident, Michele also had another political piece come up missing. It is a piece called “Dems Win Big in 2004″ (below left), also by Susan Shie. It was hung at an office of a campaign staff member in Chicago’s Volunteer Headquarters from 2007-2008. When the office closed, she didn’t return to the office in time to retrieve it.

Please contact Michele at [email protected].

Susan Plack Quilts

Nov 03 2003

“Talk about a surreal set of circumstances,” writes Susan Plack. “I packed up our van when we were concerned about having to evacuate because of the (California) fires, and when we unpacked, the bag of quilts was put in the pile of things to donate to fire victims by mistake.” Now Susan needs your help recovering these missing quilts! They were last seen on October 31, 2003 at the St. Vincent de Paul warehouse in San Deigo, California where they were accidentally donated with other clothing items.

California Lighthouses is an original quilt features twelve California lighthouses around the Star of India clipper ship. It is about 80″ by 80″. The blocks are set in an Attic Windows variation. The back of the quilt also has a large window. It is hand appliqued, machine pieced, hand quilted and has silk ribbon embroidery. The quilting is not complete and it does not have a label yet.

Southern California Missions is a 70″ by 80″ original design that features local missions. There is a trail that connects the blocks. The quilt top is hand appliqued and machine pieced and the names of the missions are embroidered, but it is not completed yet. There is a label on the front on a mission sign.

San Diego Victorians is a 70″ by 80″ quilt that was created from photos of Victorian houses. The photo shows only the top two rows of houses. This top is hand pieced and hand appliqued with some silk ribbon embroidery but not yet quilted or labeled.

Jesse’s Graduation Quilt is a 120″ by 120″ quilt that features t-shirts in an attic window setting. The blocks have white backgrounds with t-shirts appliqued on top. This quilt also features blue jeans, twill pants fabric, band patches, clothing tags and signature blocks. It is machine pieced and machine appliqued and not yet layered or quilted. A label in one of the attic windows on the front says, “Jesse, Rock on!” The photo shows the start of the back of the missing graduation quilt, showing an example of fabrics and designs.

Below are also four blocks that were also accidentally sent to the thrift store. Each block is an original design based on photos taken by Susan. Each block is 17″ square. In order, they are a Miner’s Cabin in Canada, Dungaire Castle in Ireland, a Japanese building, and the Taj Mahal.

If you have seen any of these quilts or blocks, please contact Susan through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.
