Pastel Sampler Quilt

Mar 21 2007

Fabrics used

Marica Odom is hoping to recover her pastel sampler quilt. In December 2006 she brought the pieced top, backing and batting to a quilt shop so it could be quilted. The quilter went out of the room to get change for a customer and when she returned the quilt materials were missing. The customer was not contacted because they were a new customer. Others were contacted, but no one knew anything about the missing quilt.

This machine pieced quilt is approximately 60″ by 72″. The blocks used include Rail Fence, Double Nine Patch, Shoo Fly, Monkey Wrench, Jacob’s Ladder, Ohio Star, Card Trick, Lily, Star in a Star, Wedding Ring, Bear’s Paw, and Drunkard’s Path. The main colors are pastel pink, blue, green, and lavendar, shown in the fabric swatch to the left. It has a yellow border.

Please contact Marcia through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page if you know anything about this quilt.

Six Family Quilts

Feb 13 2007

Cathy Nelson reports the theft of six quilts that were stolen from her father’s home in December 2006. The stolen quilts include a double wedding ring with a yellow background, a single wedding ring, a log cabin, a fan quilt, a Dresden plate, and a bear claw. The quilts had been stored in her mother’s cedar chest in their rural home in the area of Belleville, Wisconsin. The home was burglarized when her father was recovering from lyme disease in an assisted living home. The thieves took only valuable antiques.

All of the quilts are traditional designs and she believes they were all full bed size. The quilts were scrappy quilts dating from 1900 to 1929. All of them have muslin backgrounds except the double wedding ring with the yellow. All are backed with plain muslin and are hand pieced and hand quilted. Her grandmother used Morning Mist batting, so they are quite thin. She believes that her grandmother’s initials, along with the date, are embroidered on the lower right front. Her initals were C.S. before marriage in 1905 and C.G. after marriage. All of the quilts were in pristine condition.

Train Quilt

Jun 16 2005

In 2002, Betty Moore made a Train Quilt for her grandson, John E. Moore, IV. The quilt was last seen in May 2004 when her son’s house was foreclosed on. Betty doesn’t know if the quilt went to a shelter, Goodwill, a pawn shop, or was given away.

John’s mother started the quilt with the blue and white blocks. When he was sixteen months old, his mother passed away very suddenly. A year later Betty took the unfinished quilt top and finished it with the train theme. Betty writes, “We are very sad to lose this quilt, because it is one of the only things this little boy has left from his mother. We would love to have the quilt returned.”

The quilt is machine pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. It covers the top of a full-size bed. There are blue and white blocks in the center with large blue blocks in the corners with railroad crossing signs. The top and bottom are white with the name “John” appliqued in blue. The sides are white with a blue train and a teddy bear driver. Puffs of smoke are quilted from the train’s smokestack and birds are embroidered above the train.

If you can help recover this quilt, please contact Betty at [email protected].

Recovered! Allegheny Jam

May 27 2005

Allegheny Jam

Allegheny Jam

This is the story of another quilt that was lost by a shipping company. It was lost on its way from the MQS show to its owner. The tracking information only stated that the box arrived in Philadelphia and the contents were missing. This quilt was last seen on May 15, 2005 at the MQS Show in Overland Park, Kansas. It was made by nine quiltmakers in the McKinney Guild. Lynn Lasswell commissioned it for the Allegheny Friendship House in Philadelphia, PA. This quilt won a second place ribbon at the Dallas Quilt Show.

On May 27, 2005 the quilt was finally delivered to a next door neighbor!

The original design was inspired by Romare Beardon’s work. This quilt is 64″ by 58″. The main colors are red, black, lavendar, green, and brown. It is machine pieced and machine appliqued. Heavy machine quilting adds dimension and texture to the piece. A label is hand appliqued to the lower right corner of the backing.
