Birds of Color

Aug 27 2007

Birds of Color by Anne Morrill Robinson

“Birds of Color,” an incredible work of art by Anne Morrell Robinson has been stolen from the New York State Fair Arts Building. On Saturday, August 24, 2002 at about 9:45 PM while the show was still open, it was pulled of the wall at the state fair and it disappeared. This quilt had won a second place ribbon in the applique and pieced division. A police report has been filed, but we need your help to recover this quilt.

The design for this 108″ by 108″ original quilt begins with a pheasant in the central medallion. Twelve album-type bird blocks surround the center. The outer border has peacocks and seasonal flowers in the corners. Flying geese blocks form the sashing. The colors are bright: red, green, gold, brown and blue. The pieced background is white on white. Many of the fabrics used are feather prints. The backing has a large bird and floral print with two strips of blue border print depicting birds and baskets. This quilt is machine appliqued, machine pieced, and hand quilted. There are feathers quilted into the background with a 1/4″ grid.

After two years of work on this one-of-a-kind quilt, Anne finished it in 2002. Anne embroidered her name on the front of the quilt in the right corner on a ribbon that is in a bird’s mouth. It says, “Anne C. Morrell 2002″ . The quilt also has a hand appliqued label in the lower left corner of the back. The label has Anne’s name and address along with a picture of an envelope with birds sitting on it.

Anne is a well established, award winning quilt artist and teacher. She says it feels like “someone has stolen two years of my life.” If you know any information about this stolen quilt, please contact Anne at [email protected].

Pastel Basket Quilt

Jan 15 2007

Jodi Longobardo is searching for a Pastel Basket Quilt that was made by her great-great-aunt or her great-great-grandmother. It was owned by her great-grandmother. No one knows what became of it after she passed away. Jodi has been searching for it, but no one remembers taking it. It was on her great-grandmother’s bed when she was a little girl and she remember sleeping under it many times. She is hopeful she could recover it because it would have extreme sentimental value to her.

Jodi’s quilt is full to queen size. The main colors are pastel yellow, white and other pastel colors. It is hand pieced and hand quilted. Jodi last saw this quilt around 1980 at her great-grandmother’s house in Morrisville, Pennsylvania.

Recovered! Ode to Sally-Anne

Apr 08 2006

On Thursday, March 2, 2006 Beryl Mayger lost the quilt top she had been working on for over a year. It may have been taken from a basket in the Watsonia Library in Victoria, Australia, or it may have been dropped in the library parking lot.

On the morning of March 28 Beryl opened her front door and there was her quilt top! Someone had mysteriously left it on her doorstep. What a wonderful gift!

This quilt was made from the “Primarily Patchwork” pattern. It is approximately 85″ by 95″. It has a beige background with tiny red cherries on it. There is an appliqued central bouquet that is surrounded by an oval of appliqued flowers, leaves and pomegranets, and there is a bunch of flowers at each corner. It is made up of nine panels joined together.
