Memory of a Sailor

Dec 12 2008

Candy Fagan made a special quilt featuring memory pictures of a sailor named Matthew, aged 19, killed in Iraq in 2006. The twin size quilt has pieced 6-inch blocks down both sides with pictures in the middle.

In January 2007 Candy shipped it from Cumming, Georgia to Jacksonville, Florida. When the package was delivered, no one was home. The box was left at an apartment, but the owner never received it. There was also a letter in the box written to the Conte family expressing sorrow over the passing of Matthew.

Please contact Candy at [email protected] if you can help in the recovery of this quilt.

Cat’s Meow

Dec 12 2008

The Cat's Meow by Katherine Holzknecht

Katherine Holzknecht entered her quilt into the Kenmore Art Show held at Northlake Lutheran Church in Kenmore, Washington. On August 15, 2008, the church was broken into and her quilt, seven photographs, four computers, and miscellaneous office equipment were stolen.

Katherine altered a knitting magazine design to create this quilt. It is 44″ by 71″. It includes shades of brown, black, white, gray, and magenta. There are fifteen blocks of cat silhouettes. The borders have mice and stripes. The main surface of the quilt is knitted with three rows of five blocks sewn together, and the knitted border is sewn on. The backing fabric is quilted to the surface with heavy white cotton yarn. Each block is padded. The fuzzy backing fabric is rolled on the edges and sewn down as another border. This quilt was started in 2003 and quilted in 2008.

Please contact Katherine at [email protected] if you find this quilt.

Log Cabin with Wide Border

Dec 11 2008

Log Cabin by Kayla Kennington

Kayla Kennington has been searching for her missing quilt since 2008. She made it in 2000. It was originally just made as a bed cover, but she became attached to it when she was ill with pneumonia. Her mother would come and sit with her, and they played a guessing game to pass the time — which square looked like an ocean, or a certain flower, etc. It was a wonderful bonding time with her mom.

The quilt is a simple log cabin with a wider border. The blocks are 7-inch square. There are 9 or 10 blocks across and 11 blocks down. It has a tan and white busy print backing with a sleeve for hanging. The edge is a 1/4-inch beige and black stripe. The quilt is tied with pearl cotton floss. The quilt includes over 100 designs of small scale cotton print fabrics.

Please contact Kayla through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page if you’ve seen this quilt.

Mona Lisa

Dec 01 2008

Mona Lisa by Susan Raymond

Susan Raymond is hoping to recover two quilts that were lost during a move. They were last seen when the quilts were packed in June 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona. Two other families also had belongings on the truck, and were moving to Washington state. To date, the moving company still hasn’t been able to locate the missing quilts.

This king size quilt was made between 1987 and 1994. It is hand painted. The central portion is based on the famous Mona Lisa painting. The blocks are hand painted and the border blocks are pieced. There are six Tree of Life blocks and 12 Islamic Puzzle blocks in the corners. This quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted. The main colors are greens and browns.

The second quilt (not pictured) is based on Edvard Munch’s “Scream” painting. It is a small wall hanging which is also hand painted, hand pieced, and hand quilted. The borders are pieced.

Susan writes, “This quilt has many emotional ties to my family, as the piecing and quilting were done during significant events. I am willing to offer a reward for the return of this quilt.” If you can help in the recovery of this quilt, please contact Susan at [email protected].

Brick Wedding Quilt

Oct 02 2008

Wedding Quilt

Jeffrey and Jenni-Lynn Brick are searching for a quilt made by Eileen Simon. It was made as a wedding gift. The colors are primarily blues, browns, greens, and white. The blocks are arranged in a brick pattern. It was last seen around May 15, 2008 when it was taken to the family dry cleaning buisness of Kyung-Sook Woo on Tenth Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. On May 17, the store owner was murdered. When the store re-opened on May 24, the quilt had disappeared. The new owners have not been able to locate which laundry facility was used to clean the quilt, and it has never been returned to the dry cleaner by anyone who might have mistakenly picked it up.

If you find this quilt, please contact Jeffrey and Jenni-Lynn at [email protected].

Butterfly Scrap Quilt

Oct 02 2008

Lucinda (Cindy) McVey is searching for a Butterfly Scrap Quilt which was made by Grace A. Green. It is full-bed size. Yellow is the dominant color, and the sashing and borders are lilac. The quilt was made in 1968. It was last seen in 1970 or 1971 when it was misplaced during a move from Oklahoma to Indianapolis. Her husband stored some of their belongings in a small junk/furniture store on East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. When they went back to collect their belongings, the store had changed hands and their stuff was gone, including Lucinda’s quilt, a china dog collection, her great-grandmother’s blue pin dot china shoes, etc. This was the only quilt her grandmother had made for her. It was quilted by machine in a rounded zigzap stitch about 1″ apart. The binding was wrapped from the back. The butterflies had rounded wings and were appliqued in black floss.

If you’ve seen a quilt that matches this description, please contact Lucinda at [email protected].
