Pieces of History

Pieces of History

Niki Nelson hopes someone has found her husband’s quilt, Pieces of History, which was stolen when their home was burglarized. They believe it was likely used to bundle up their computers and jewelry. The quilt was last seen on November 8, 2010 in Auburn, Washington.

The quilt blocks made by Niki’s late mother-in-law. Each block is made up of nine squares. The blocks were found when her family was cleaning out her house. In 2008, two very similar twin-size quilts were made for the two brothers using those blocks. The picture is of the sister quilt, not the one that is missing. The squares will be slightly different on the missing quilt and the trim fabric is a bit darker and has very small red flowers. All of the squares are fabrics from the 1960′s and 1970′s. The squares were scraps of fabrics used to make curtains, skirts, blouses, boy’s shirts, pajamas, etc.

If you find this quilt, please contact Niki at [email protected].

Feb 09 2010

Roberta Hodge would like to recover three quilts that disappeared during a move. They were last seen on October 8, 1994 on a North American Van Lines moving truck in Riviera Beach, Florida. Everything on the van was stolen.

One of the missing quilts is a Dahlia scrap quilt made by Stephen Kusmik. It is appliqued with a scalloped border bound in green. This 86" by 98" quilt is heavily hand quilted. The main colors are green, yellow, and white. This quilt still had the pencil lines marked for the quilting on it when it was stolen. It was made sometime during the 1930s or 1940s. This quilt was documented for the Connecticut quilt search project in 1993. A picture and detail info may be found on The Quilt Index website, ID Number 443.

Julie’s Round Robin

Dec 12 2008

Julie's Round Robin

Julie Higginson would like to finally receive her round robin quilt. It was last seen around December 2007.

Julie writes, “This was a Round Robin project. The last lady to work on it lives in Brooklyn, New York and she added the Delectable Mountains blocks. She then sent it to the next lady in the group who lives in East Bend, North Carolina. That lady let us all know that she did indeed receive the quilt top and would get to work on her addition. We never heard from her again. Each of us in the group have emailed her, left voicemails on her home and cell phones, and I even sent her a personal check and asked her to just return the quilt top to me no questions asked. All to no avail. We had swapped with this lady in the past and never had any problems before, so we are clueless as to why she would do this to us…Several of us in the group have done some research on the lady who stole this quilt top and another one. At first we were afraid that perhaps something dreadful had happened to her, and we were worried about her. But through a bit of research on the internet and making some phone calls, we have found out that she is indeed in good health and still living and working in her community. As a good faith effort, we even sent her own Round Robin back to her recently…and she REFUSED to accept the package! Very strange.”

This quilt is about 50″ square. It is very scrappy, but there’s a great deal of reds and greens, as well as tan background fabrics. The center block is made up of four mini log cabin blocks with a pot of flowers appliqued in the center. The next round are more mini log cabin blocks with red hearts appliqued onto the light colored fabric. The next round is made up of Delectable Mountain blocks. It is machine pieced and machine appliqued.

If you can help with the recovery of this quilt, please contact Julie at [email protected].

Butterfly Scrap Quilt

Oct 02 2008

Lucinda (Cindy) McVey is searching for a Butterfly Scrap Quilt which was made by Grace A. Green. It is full-bed size. Yellow is the dominant color, and the sashing and borders are lilac. The quilt was made in 1968. It was last seen in 1970 or 1971 when it was misplaced during a move from Oklahoma to Indianapolis. Her husband stored some of their belongings in a small junk/furniture store on East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana. When they went back to collect their belongings, the store had changed hands and their stuff was gone, including Lucinda’s quilt, a china dog collection, her great-grandmother’s blue pin dot china shoes, etc. This was the only quilt her grandmother had made for her. It was quilted by machine in a rounded zigzap stitch about 1″ apart. The binding was wrapped from the back. The butterflies had rounded wings and were appliqued in black floss.

If you’ve seen a quilt that matches this description, please contact Lucinda at [email protected].
