Missing Estate Quilts

Sep 08 2005

Ann Rutherford-Berthiaume is hoping to recover some quilts that were sold against her wishes at an auction at 211 University Ave., Waxahachie, TX on July 30, 2005. The auctioneer was Larry Schaefer.

These quilts were her grandmother’s, her great-grandmother’s, and possible her great-great-grandmother’s. There were 20-21 sold at the auction. She had asked for photos of all the quilts but only received about one-fifth of them. She was able to purchase the ones she knew about, but was never told about the twenty or more others. She basically has one generation and is missing the other two generations.

Patterns of the auctioned quilts are a crazy quilt made of silks with embroidery which is believed to be made by her great-grandmother, a log cabin quilt, bowtie, nine patch, etc. See photo of the auction quilts below. The crazy quilt was sold to a lady from Midlothian, TX. Obviously she will not be able to buy back all the quilts but would like the buyers to contact her.

She is also looking for some quilts that were taken from her grandmother’s residence in the late 1980′s when her grandmother was ill. The family realized these were missing when the estate was being settled. There was a double wedding ring, a grandmother’s flower garden, and a cathedral window. The double wedding ring had never been used and was made of cottons, hand-pieced and hand-quilted. It is believed it was made in the late 1930′s or 1940′s.

If you have any information about these quilts, please contact Ann at [email protected].

King Size Grandmother’s Flower Garden

Jun 24 2004

Linda Saville has found a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt which she would like to return to its rightful owner. It is a king size quilt with a white polyester background and the flowers made of different colors. She estimates it was made after 1960, though some of the fabrics look older. It does not have a label. She believes the quilt is perhaps from either Calgary, Alberta, Canada or Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Grandmother’s Flower Garden

Aug 28 2003

We need help locating a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt that was made in 1971 or 1972. It is a double bed size, scrappy quilt with brown centers, green leaves and a border of white muslin. It is hand pieced and hand quilted. This quilt is signed in the lower right corner, “M. Buser and L. Buser” or “L. Buser and M. Buser” and the year. The label is hand embroidered with green embroidery floss.

This quilt was last seen during the summer of 1996 in Durango, Colorado. It was in a storage unit that needed to be emptied out, so a friend offered to bring everything to the owner’s sister in Kansas. When everything was arrived in Kansas, the contents had to be split between two locations, Wichita and Great Bend. Several years went by before the owner searched for this quilt and it couldn’t be found.

If you have seen this quilt, please contact the owner through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Grandmother’s Flower Garden

Feb 13 2003

For three years Linda Christie hand pieced a Grandmother’s FlowerGarden quilt, using a commercial pattern. The quilt was last seen in Mexia, Texas. A friend who hand quilted it for her packed it in a box at the shipping company in Mexia. She was shipping it back to Linda. Apparently, Linda writes, "Someone must have seen her pack it and then promptly took it once she relinquished it at the [shipping company].” Linda spent many hours talking to the lost and found in Atlanta, Georgia but nothing ever came from the investigation.

This quilt is about a double size. It uses all different blue prints for the circular flowers. The borders are solid peach and solid sage green surrounds the blue circular prints that make up the flower design. Her name is machine monogrammed with a script font (about 1-1/2” high) on the lower side of the quilt in beige/peach. It is hand quilted.

If you’ve seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Linda through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Clarice Noll Quilts

Jan 25 2002

In June 2001, Clarice Noll had four quilts stolen from a storage area in her home. Also stolen were antiques, braided rugs and glassware. Most of these items were reported to have been taken to Maryland and sold at auction.

The Log Cabin quilt is about 90″ square and has four large hearts in the center. The main colors are maroon, gray, reds and blacks. It was made from shirt factory excess sleeve facings. This quilt, made around 1978, is machine pieced and hand quilted. This quilt was made with a cotton batting and is quilted very closely. It also has a prairie point border. This quilt does not have a label.

A Grandmother’s Flower Garden was also stolen. It is double bed size. The middle circles of the flowers are made of prints and are surrounded by coordinating solid colors. There are white paths between the flowers. The edge of the quilt was finished off by turning under the hexagon edges. This quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted. It was made about 1995.

A third quilt that was stolen is a Star and Pinwheel design. This double bed size quilt was made with whites, natural muslin and various prints. The backing is lavendar with several pieced blocks. It is machine pieced and hand quilted in 1997. This quilt was on a bed in Clarice’s house when it was stolen.

There was also a double bed size, hand embroidered quilt with print sashing. This quilt was mainly melon and maroon on white. It was a purchased kit quilt that was begun in 1968 by Marion Spicher. Clarice finished it about 1990. This quilt was labeld on the back with embroidery. The label text includes both of their names and “for Ashley Dawn Kitko.”

If you can help locate any of these quilts, please contact Clarice at [email protected].
