Recovered! Katrina’s Storm at Sea

Jan 12 2010

Katrina's Storm at Sea

Betty Young needed help recovering a quilt that was shipped to her daughter in Oklahoma City. The package was shipped on September 28, 2009. When the package reached Oklahoma City, a clerk at the shipping company decided the mailing address was not valid, so the package was not put on the delivery truck. No attempt was made to contact Betty or her husband, even though three phone numbers were included in the paperwork. The address was, indeed, valid and a complaint has been filed. Once the complaint was filed, the package was mysteriously sent to Random House Publishing in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Happily, during January 2010 Random House Publishing finally found Betty’s quilt and returned it at their expense!

This quilt is a Storm at Sea pattern which took Betty ten years to complete. The focus fabric is a turquoise background with geckos in shades of greens, blues, purples, and lavenders. Also in the package was approximately six yards of Minkee in white, pink, and lavender.

Dorothy’s Star of Faith and Love

Dorothy's Star of Faith and Love

Dorothy's Star of Faith and Love

In July 2001 B. Claire Medlenka FitzGerald made a very special quilt for Mrs. Dorothy Daneluz. Claire used a pattern called "Rachel’s Star" which she found in the December 2000 issue of Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine. After Mrs. Daneluz died, while the estate administrator was away from the home making final arrangements, a thief entered the home and removed several personal items, including this quilt. Also missing was a hand-crocheted tablecloth (Queen’s Crown pattern) which Claire had made as an anniversary gift for Mrs. Daneluz. Claire believes Mrs. Daneluz’s former companion was the thief. She belives he illegally had a key made to Mrs. Daneluz’s condominium during her last few days of life. When the suspect was questioned he replied, "I threw those in the garbage," but he is known to be a frequent patron and trader at a nearby Palo Alto flea market. A formal complaint has been filed with the Palo Atlo (California) City Police Department. The quilt was last seen during November 2001. After almost ten years, Claire still believes that this quilt is located in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, and she is hoping someone will recognize it.

Dorothy’s Star of Faith and Love" was Claire’s first paper-piecing project. She machine pieced and machine quilted it. The focal point of the quilt is a golden, intertwined Star of David. The dominant colors are blues, golds and teals. The backing has a pale blue background with a small scale print depicting the Star of David and the Menorrah.

The label for this quilt is also paper pieced using a Crazy Rose design. It says, "Dorothy’s Star of Faith and Love / for my special Mother / Beverly C. M. Moreno / Douglas, Arizona / July 6, 2001." The label was fused to the back of the quilt and hand stitched directly to the quilt backing.

If you can help in the recovery of this quilt, please contact Claire at [email protected]. Originally posted February 13, 2002. Updated January 12, 2010.

(The "Rachel’s Star" quilt was designed by Mary Leman Austin. It is a copyrighted design and is used here with permission from QNM.)

Nov 24 2009
Meditation Scroll - Air

Meditation Scroll - Air

On September 21, 2009, Anna Hergert shipped a package containing four quilts. She shipped them from Oak Harbor, Washington to someone in Richland, Michigan. According to the shipping company’s records and the tracking information, the package was delivered and left on the front porch on September 24, 2009.

The recipeint told Anna that she had given the shipping company strict instructions NOT to leave anything on her front porch. The shipping company says they are not responsible for the loss, and therefore the insurance on the package is null and void.

Two months later, Anna was happy to report that the wall hangings had been recovered when the recipient found the quilts among other shipments in her house.

Anna writes, "I just received payment and am elated to share this positive outcome with you and your audience! Publishing the quilts as lost/stolen certainly helped resolve the matter!"
