Friendship Blocks Quilt

Apr 06 2001

Friendship Irish Chain by Judy Calvert

The binding wasn’t even completely on when this Irish Chain Friendship Block quilt was lost and stolen. Judy Calvert was still in the process of finishing up the hand sewing on her light brown and deep red quilt. On March 9, 2001 it apparently fell off the cart in the hallway of the Embassy Suites hotel in Southcenter (Seattle), Washington. Unfortunately it was never found and it was not turned into the hotel’s lost and found.

This king-size quilt has about seventy-five 4-1/2″, multicolor, friendship blocks which were made by dear friends. A single Irish Chain, shown to the left, surrounds each block which were set on point. Side squares were set straight. The quilt is machine pieced and machine quilted. The binding had been sewn on one side but it was not completely hand finished when it was lost. The quilt did not have a label yet and Judy does not have a picture.

If you have found a quilt that fits this description, please contact Judy at [email protected].

Marjorie Phillips Quilts

Mar 16 2001

Marjorie Phillips has reported that several quilts which she made for her daugher, Sophia Phillips, and her grandson were stolen. On December 10, 1997 her daughter loaded up a U-Haul truck in Las Vegas, Nevada with all of her possessions including these quilts. The packed van was parked out in front of her house so they could leave early in the morning. During the night a thief hot wired the van and stole everything they owned. After this experience, Marjorie recommends that others remove the coil from the engine compartment of any packed truck if it is left standing, especially if others saw you loading the truck. The van was eventually located, but only odds and ends were left.

The major loss, in terms of quilted items, was a queen sized quilt which she made for her grandson, Bradley. This quilt is called “Bars and Beasts”. It has a matching dust ruffle, a matching smaller TV quilt (second photo) and a pillow. The larger quilt is 95″ by 76″ and was made in 1996. Bradley’s name and birthdate were quilted in the middle of this quilt. The TV quilt is 36″ by 36″. The colors of both of these quilts are strong primary colors and both are hand quilted.

Another quilt that was stolen was a Modified Nine Patch (a Trudi Hughes design). This is a large double bed size quilt and was a birthday gift for Sophia’s 25th birthday. It is a machine pieced, scrappy quilt with a very high loft batting.

There was also a 34″ by 34″ wall hanging which was made for a quilt challenge in 1990 and it won an honorable mention. The challenge was to use a dark, striped fabric. Marjorie made this quilt with nine pinwheel blocks in a spool setting. It is machine pieced and hand quilted. All quilts were labeled.

The best part of this whole experience was that Marjorie had documented her quilts, complete with photos, sizes, and other background information. This was invaluable to her for insurance purposes. Naturally, they would much rather retreive the quilts. If you can help, please contact Marjorie at [email protected]

Grandmother’s Signature Quilt

Mar 01 2001

During Lorah’s last visit with her grandmother before she died, her grandmother pulled out a special quilt out of a chest and said, “This will be yours when I am gone.” Unfortunately, when she died in 1965, she left all her household contents for Lorah’s father to sort through. One of their relatives came to help and took many things to a charity bazaar. The quilt was apparently sold at that bazaar. The quilt would have been purchased in either Buffalo, New York or Norwalk, Connecticutt in 1965.

The quilt was composed of small squares. Each square had been stitched by a family member. Lorah remembers that one square had the name “Abigail Rockhill” and the date “1847″.

Lorah says, “I now have no legal claim to the quilt but have missed it since that day 37 years ago. If anyone knows of this quilt, I would be deeply grateful if they would contact me. I know it is probably fairly valuable by now. I do not want it for the money value but for the family history it contains. I would certainly be willing to pay fair market value.” Please contact Lorah at [email protected]

Sampler Baby Quilt

Mar 01 2001

Sampler Baby Quilt by Lana Metzger

Lana Metzger stitched a lot of love into the sampler baby quilt that she made for her granddaughter, but now she is looking for this quilt which was lost at the Orlando Airport on February 23, 2001. She believes it was possibly left or dropped in the gift store located by Gate 54. This was her grandbaby’s favorite quilt, and it took two weeks for her to go to sleep peacefully without it. Lana has tried to call the airport to no avail.

The quilt is a small baby quilt with four 12-inch blocks. The blocks were applique hearts, shoofly block, drunkard’s path and another that she doesn’t remember the name of. The quilt is tan, red and blue and the backing had the same red paisley print that was used in the blocks.

Lana will gladly pay shipping costs to anyone who can return this quilt. Please contact her at [email protected].

Recovered! Eagle Round Robin Quilt

Feb 13 2001

Eagle Round Robin by Ludy Rauber

This was just another sad story of an uncompleted round robin exchange. Eight women participated in an on-line guild. The round robin exchange began in June 1997. This patriotic eagle quilt top was last seen in September 1998 when it was mailed from The Plains, Ohio to Garwood, New Jersey for the last participant to add her work.

For two years, Ludy was unable to contact the person who last had this quilt. In January 2001, that person saw the quilt top posted on this webpage and she recognized it. After searching, she found the top that her husband had packed away and she contacted Ludy.

On February 13, 2001 Ludy rejoiced, “It worked! YOUR PAGE WORKS!!!! Yesterday’s mail brought my long lost round robin quilt top back to Reston!”

Missing Round Robin Quilt Tops

Feb 13 2001

Eight women participated in a on-line round robin quilt exchange. Unfortunately, not all eight women received their quilts in the end. One quilt top was missing for 2-1/2 years before it was found and returned to its owner. Two others are still missing. Can you help us locate these quilt tops?

Cathy Marshall of Wyoming was part of this same round robin group. The center of her quilt top was a pieced angel from a commercial pattern, about 24-inches. It was done with many Moda fabrics. Cathy is willing to pay for the return of her quilt top. You can contact Cathy Marshall at [email protected].

Cathy Janes of The Plains, Ohio is also still waiting for her missing top. She does not have a photo of the quilt, but when she worked on it, the center was a dark green Moda and Hoffman pansy floral on a black background with a Bentrax yellow. The pattern she used was ribbon friendship stars. She does not know what it looks like now that others have added to it. If you have any information on her quilt top, please contact Cathy Janes at [email protected].

Gail Surrena is asking for help is finding her baby quilt which has been missing for a long time. Her mother pieced the baby quilt and her great-grandmother quilted in in 1954. This treasured quilt was used to bring both of her sons home from the hospital.

The quilt is an applique of the Old Woman in The Shoe. It is trimmed in baby blue, which is worn from so many years of tender love. The edges are scalloped. The shoe is brown. The quilt also has a blood stain on it.

Gail adds, “I would love to have the quilt returned. No questions asked.”

Music Quilt

Jan 09 2001

Julie Rostad is searching for a quilt that was lost twenty years ago when she was moving from Minot, North Dakota. It was a one-of-a-kind raffle quilt which was made from their old dark blue wool band blazers.

Each block has a different musical saying. For example, one block has a Staccato note with the saying “jump!” Some of the stitching is done by machine with white thread. The lettering is done in red chain stitch by hand.

If you know anything about this quilt, please contact Julie at [email protected].

200 Child-Sized Donation Quilts

Jan 09 2001

Lisa Brunstetter has reported that 200 child-size quilts were stolen from her car during December 1997. Around 1 PM on a Monday, she had stopped at the Marley Station Mall to pick up a Christmas gift. In the back seat of her car were trash bags full of quilts that were to be donated to hospitalized children. When she returned, the window had been broken and the quilts and several other things had been stolen.

The theft was reported in the local paper, but never found. There were about 200 small quilts ranging from 36-inches to 50-inches in dimension.

Lisa believes the thief may have just “dumped” the quilts when they found out what they had stolen, but she holds out hope that they can still be recovered. If you have any information about these quilts, please contact Lisa at [email protected].
