Gator Quilt

Aug 06 2009

Gators by Helen Lund

Helen Lund is hoping to find the Gator Quilt she made for Heather Batson. Heather lives in Orlando, Florida and had just moved into a duplex about one month previously. When she was out of town for a funeral, her home was broken into and this quilt was among the items taken. A police report was filed at the time of the theft.

This queen size quilt was made using Eleanor Burns’s book “Bits and Pieces.” It is 84″ by 103″, and it is machine pieced and machine quilted. The quilting has gator heads, football helmets and “UF” done as an allover panagraph. The main colors are blues and oranges. The background is a white, University of Florida licensed print with gators and “UF” on the print. This quilt is labeled with something like, “Christmas 2008; To: Heather Batson, Our Favorite Gator; From Dad and Helen; Quilt by Helen Lund.” The label is sewn on the back and was dome by machine embroidery.

Andrea’s Yellowbrick Road

Aug 06 2009

Andrea's Yellowbrick Road by Sandra Cooper

In 2004 Sandie Cooper made this quilt for her granddaughter, Andrea Gordon-Cooper, who lived with her mother in Senatobia, Mississippi. Sandie mailed it to Andrea’s mother, Terrie Gordon, in time for Christmas 2004. Terrie mentioned receiving the quilt along with some toys. At the time Terrie was living with a boyfriend and, when she moved out, she did not take the quilt with her.

This quilt is lap size to crib size, made from a commercial pattern called Yellowbrick Road. It is machine pieced and machine quilted by Anna Cheever of Wichita, Kansas. Andrea’s father, Ryan, helped pick out the colors and the placement of the blocks. He added the red felt hearts on the front of the quilt.

Andrea now lives with Sandie, and they would love to locate the quilt for sentimental reasons. If you can help, please contact Sandie through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Sunset Star

Jul 22 2009

Sarah in New York is searching for a lap quilt she made in 2002. The Sunset Star quilt is mainly green and blue. It is machine pieced and hand quilted. This quilt was last seen in June 2003 on Dryden Road, Ithaca, New York. It was stored in the attic. People were subletting the apartment below, and Sarah suspects they did something with it.

Susan writes, "This was the first quilt I made, in college, and I would really love to have it back." If you’ve seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Sarah through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Recovered! Calling Mermaid

Jul 20 2009

Calling Mermaid by Lynda Thompson

Lynda Thompson made this original art quilt, "Calling Mermaid", and it is now missing. It was last seen in May 2009 at the Florence Museum in Florence, South Carolina. It was to be sent to Avery Research Center in Charleston, South Carolina. Lynda was told the quilt was lost either in transit or at Avery Research Center.

After Lynda told them that she had reported this quilt lost or stolen, they "got busy" and gave her a tracking number. Within days, the quilt was back in Lynda’s possession.

Recovered! Compass Star

Jul 01 2009

Compass Star by Nancy Goldsworthy

Nancy Goldsworthy was searching for her Compass Star quilt. Nancy writes, “This is a very special quilt to me and my mother. It is the only one of my quilts that she ever asked for. It was loaned out to hang at MQS and was lost on it’s way home.” It was last seen on May 16, 2009 at the Machine Quilters Showcase in Overland Park, Kansas.

Happily, at the end of June 2009, this quilt was discovered in an unmarked box in storage, and it has now been returned to a very relieved owner!

This quilt is 96″ square. The main colors are green, yellow, and purple. Nancy also used pink and cream fairy frost fabric for the background. The purple fabric has sparkles. The quilt, made in 2007, is machine pieced and machine quilted. It has a label which is hand appliqued to the lower corner that says, “Made by Nancy Goldsworthy, Portland, Oregon, for my mother Irene Stephens. Happy Mother’s Day.”

Quilted Walleye

Jul 01 2009

Quilted Walleye, front

During September 2008 Sue Rutford created her Quilted Walleye quilt to be part of the “Walleye School of Fish” exhibit at CivicFest, an event that took place in Minneapolis during the Republican Convention. Sadly, the organizer of the walleye art exhibit was unable to find the quilt after the exhibit was dismantled.

Quilted Walleye, Sue Rutford

Quilted Walleye, back

This piece is actually two quilts that are mounted on opposite sides of a walleye-shaped piece of wood. They were mounted using heavy carpet tape, so it is possible they could have been removed from the wood and are no longer together. One quilt is pieced and the other quilt is fused. Each piece is about 4 feet wide by 2 feet high. The main colors are blues and greens. The fused quilt uses all hand-dyed fabrics. There is a label on the front of the top fin of the fused walleye quilt. The label has Sue’s name and August 2008.

If you find this quilt, please contact Sue at [email protected].

North Carolina Quilt

Jun 26 2009

On Sunday, June 21, 2009, someone found a quilt on the westbound lane of Highway 64 near Tarboro, North Carolina. The quilt was wrapped in one of those plastic blanket packages. The quilt appears to be newly made, in wonderful condition. It is hand and machine quilting. There is no label attached and they cannot find a signature.

The person who found this quilt wants to return it to its owner, as she is a needle worker, and says she would be sick if she lost one of her works. If this might be your quilt, please email [email protected].

Bright Crazy Quilt

Jun 22 2009

Leah French Gonzalez is searching for a brightly colored crazy quilt made by her grandmother, Anna Henderson. When her grandmother passed away, her quilts were divided up. One was given to Leah’s aunt, Terry Stransky. When Terry passed away, the quilt could not be found among her things. It is possible she may have sold it when she came upon hard times. The quilt was last seen in 1993 in Santa Maria, California but it could have been sold in Santa Barbara, California.

This crazy quilt is full/queen size. The main colors are bright pink, green, yellows, all made from 1970′s scrap fabric and has crazy quilt type stitching. The quilt was made sometime between 1970 and 1978. It is possible that Anna may have embroidered her name on the quilt.

Please contact Leah through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page if you’ve found a quilt that fits this description.
