Autumn Picnic For Jane

Sep 13 2009

In 2005 Bonnie Cook’s sister, Jane Duffour, and her husband lost everything they owned in Hurricane Katrina in Diamond Head, Mississippi. After the hurricane they went to stay at Bonnie’s brother’s home in Lacombe, Louisiana. In order to cheer her sister up, Bonnie made a quilted wallhanging for her birthday. Bonnie mailed it from Oakdale, California to her sister in Lacombe in a cylinder package, but the shipping company never delivered it.

This quilt is 24" by 19". The quilt featured a picture of a lady walking on a cobblestone path on a hilltop carrying a picnic basket. Bonnie used Jane Wilson’s "Picnic Lunch" as the basis for her quilt, but Bonnie took liberties with some changes. The lady is well-dressed with a tan suede cloth skirt, and black taffeta boots and sailor hat. The face is hand painted. The border is made of small plaids in autumn colors, and it has a black binding and backing. The label on the back is a picnic basket. Written on the napkin is "Autumn Picnic for Jane, Love Bonnie" and the date.

Please contact Bonnie at [email protected].

My Brother Charlie

Sep 11 2009

My Brother Charlie by Charlotte Lorenzo

Charlotte Lorenzo needs help locating a quilt she made at the Asilomar Empty Spools Seminar in Pacific Grove, California. It was taken from a meeting room on September 1, 2009. Charlotte was taking a Mary Lou Weidman workshop.

This quilt is approximately 65" by 58". It features a large pink polka-dot dinosaur with a boy reading a book on his back. (The photo to the left shows this quilt as it was being made before the boy was added.) There is also a palm tree with bright colored fronds on it. The background is lime green and about the top one-third is a blue and white plaid. The border is lime green, turquoise, hot pink and royal blue using Mary Lou’s "Hoochy Mama" blocks. The background and border were made first and then the story part of the quilt was made. This quilt is machine pieced and fused applique. It is still under construction, so it does not have a label.

Circus Quilt

Aug 31 2009

Kimberly hopes someone found her Circus Quilt and has been keeping it safe for her. Her mother left it at Miss June’s Preschool in Lakeland, Florida in 1972. The child-size quilt was made by her grandmother. It has a circus theme with a clown holding balloons, a lion in a cage, an elephant, a seal on a ball, a horse, etc. It was hand pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. Kimberly believes it was made sometime between 1967 and 1970. She believes it may have been made from a commercial pattern, but she doesn’t know which one.

If you have seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Kimberly at [email protected].

She used ticking fabric as a border. Katy hand quilted planes into the quilt, and she quilted around the main motifs. This quilt does not have a label.
