Four Guitars

Jul 04 2011

Four Guitars by Annie AmosAnnie Amos is hoping to recover an orginal art quilt called “Four Guitars.” She last saw her quilt in November 2010 in New Town, Saint Charles, Missouri. Her ex-husband was awarded the quilt as part of their divorce. She believes he donated it to the Joplin Tornado Relief along with half a dozen other quilts she had made him. She is not interesting recovering any of the other quilts, but only the guitar quilt.

This fused applique quilt is about 50″ by 66″. It is done in a style similar to Robbie Joy Eklow. Where the guitars overlap, the colors change, suggesting transparency. It uses bold hand-dyed fabrics including yellows, lime greens, blues, purples, hot pinks, and oranges on a mottled brown background. Ann hand-dyed all of the fabrics herself except the brown background which may be a Moda Marble. The quilting is done by machine using Superior Threads (variegated and solid Rainbows and King Tut). Most of the thread colors match the fabric colors. The quilt was made in 2008. Annie doesn’t remember if there is a label, but if there is it would probably say, “Four Guitars, Pieced and Quilted by Annie Amos, St. Charles, MO, 2008.” She usually hand sews her labels to a lower back corner.

Annie writes, “I donated a dozen quilts to the Red Cross Tornado Relief fund myself. I would happily donate another dozen quilts or custom make a quilt for the person who has the Four Guitars quilt. That quilt is priceless to me. It is a reminder of a happier time in my life. It contains special fabric and unique quilting that I have not been able to replicate. It is a show piece that is too small to be a usable size for anyone other than a child.”

If you find this quilt, please contact Annie at [email protected].

Kansas Remembered

Jun 03 2011

Kansas Remembered by Judy ParkerOn May 22, 2011 a tornado ripped through Joplin, Missouri. In the process, this quilt was torn off Cheryl Parker’s master bedroom wall and the house was completely destroyed.

The quilt was made by Cheryl’s mother-in-law, Judy Parker. It is king size. The main colors are green and yellow with Kansas sunflowers. It was made using a partial pattern by Kansas Troubles, which features a cream background with appliqued sunflowers arranged assymetrically to the left. The top horizontal row contains six West Wind blocks with a 2-1/2″ sashing underneath. Below this row there are vertical columns of Windmill, Rail Fence, the Kansas Troubles panel, Kansas Dugout, and Sunflower blocks. At the bottom is another group of blocks surrounded by Sunflowers and Roosters on a blue background with sunflowers. The quilt is machine pieced and machine appliqued. It was made for Christmas 2007. There is no label attached to this quilt.

Judy writes, “PLEASE, PLEASE search for this quilt. My DIL is very sad to have lost this quilt. It means so much to her. The quilt, since it was hanging on a wall, probably caught the wind and became a ‘magic rug’! It could be found anywhere from their home in Joplin towards Springfield, MO as the tornados took things that far in the ‘debris cloud’.”

If you find this quilt, please contact Judy at [email protected].

Wedding Ring Quilt

Mar 30 2011

Bernita Parker hopes someone has found her missing quilt. It is a wedding ring quilt, larger than full size, but not as big as queen size. It is off-white with some red and some shirt fabrics. The quilt was made in 1955 by her grandmother, Sallie Mae Lewis. Her grandmother’s name is written in a upper corner. Her grandmother gave it to her for her twelfth birthday. The last time Bernita saw the quilt was when she moved from Eminence, Missouri to Effingham, Illinois in 1998. She thinks it may have blown out of the truck during the move.

If you’ve found this quilt, please contact Bernita at [email protected].

Recovered! Margaret Rebecca Singleton Rose Brooksher Quilt

Jun 02 2007

Brooksher Quilt

Margaret Brewer was searching for a quilt made by her great-grandmother, Margaret Rebecca Singleton Rose Brooksher. The last known owner was Ethel Foster of Muskogee, Oklahoma who was a granddaughter. Ethel had been persuaded to sell the quilt to a man who claimed he was going to establish a quilt museum near Branson, Missouri in Eureka Springs. Margaret had never found this museum. A picture of the quilt is on page 65 of the book, “Oklahoma Heritage Quilts,” by the Oklahoma Quilt Heritage Project.

In May 2007, Margaret wrote, “I am very happy to report that a Quilt Museum in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, has finally been opened, and Margaret Rebecca’s quilt is there now. So I guess that that is the best place for the quilt to be, since it had its place in civil war history.” Originally posted January 22, 2004. Updated June 2, 2007.
