Orange, Brown and Black Quilt

Dec 31 2003

In 1971, for her fifth birthday, Kelly Smith was given an Orange, Brown and Black quilt, made especially for her by her grandmother. In 1978 it was stolen when her Bay City, Michigan house was robbed. Kelly writes, “[It is] really ugly, but it has sentimental value, and she died when I was 11 yrs old, and it was the only thing I got left of her. I miss it sooo much, and when I covered up with it, I could always feel her with me…It was beautiful to me, cause she made it for me.”

The full-size, hand-stitched quilt was made of simple blocks in bright oranges, browns and blacks along with some denims. It is very heavy and possibly has a blanket inside. It is tied with red yarn.

If this quilt sounds familiar to you, please contact Kelly at [email protected].

Recovered! American Sampler Cross Stitch Quilt

May 09 2003

Barb Stover of Berrien Springs, Michigan needed help in solving this mystery. Her mom got a phone call from Debra Grant of North Charleston, South Carolina. Someone had driven through Debra’s neighborhood during December 2002 with a basket on top of the car. It fell off and she recovered it. She found an American Sampler Cross-Stitch quilt top along with one of Barb’s brother’s business cards. Debra called the phone number on the business card hoping to locate the owner of the quilt top but the mystery was still unsolved.

Barb went into action. She contacted her local newspaper, the Hearld Palladium, in Benton Harbor, Michigan. They printed the story and the very next day the owner of the missing quilt top, Reatha Coon, called. She had been on her way to Florida when she stopped to visit her grandson in South Carolina. When it came up missing, she thought she left it in Benton Harbor. After several months in Florida, she was dismayed to find out that the quilt was not at home like she thought. Reatha is 80 years young and now that the quilt top has been recovered she plans on finishing it.

1930′s Sunbonnet Sue

Apr 09 2003

Sunbonnet Sue

Carol Jeanne King would like to recover a family heirloom. The Sunbonnet Sue quilt was started by her great-great-grandmother Bailor in the 1930′s for Carol’s mother. Carol’s grandmother worked on it when Carol’s mother was expecting her. Carol finished quilting it when she was expecting her own daughter in August 1966. Now Carol can’t remember if she gave it away or sold it or left it at the laundry. She writes, “I was young and foolish back then, and didn’t realize what a gem I had in my possession.” Carol last saw the quilt in 1969 while living in Detroit, Michigan.

This quilt fits a full size bed. The Sunbonnet Sues are appliqued on a white background and the alternate blocks are yellow. Sue is made from various fabrics typical of the 1930s. It is hand appliqued and hand quilted. There is some embroidery on Sue’s hat and petticoat. Note how Sue’s bonnet tips downward. The last time Carol saw this quilt, it had some rust spots on it, probably from pins being left in for so long.

If you can help locate this quilt, please contact Carol at [email protected].
