Crazy Patch Quilt Top

Aug 30 2010

Crazy Patch Quilt owned by Muriel Fitzgerald Jones

Crazy Patch Quilt owned by Muriel Fitzgerald Jones

Muriel D. Fitzgerald Jones is asking for help locating a crazy patch quilt top that was given to her by her mother sometime between 1978-1980. Her mother brought it to Souderton, Pennsylvania between 1980-1985 where she knew someone who could replace a few torn fabrics. At the time, Muriel was unaware that her mother was in the beginning stages of dementia. Now no one knows if the quilt top was ever returned or picked up. An ad was placed in a local paper around 2007 with no response. When Muriel’s parents sold their house in 1993, they hired two women to empty it and clean it, with the idea that they could take anything they wanted. If the quilt top had been returned, it is unknown if one of these women might have taken it or possibly even thrown it away.

Muriel believes this quilt top was made between 1900-1940 by her maternal grandmother and her family. It is a double size quilt top made mostly of fancy dress fabric scraps, including silk-like and velvets. She recognizes a few scraps from dresses her grandmother wore. The tops of the seams around each fabric were hand embroidered with a feather stitch in gold-colored embroidery floss.

Muriel grew up playing under a quilt frame in their Pennsylvania Dutch community. Naturally this quilt top has enormous sentimental value. If you are able to help locate this quilt top, please contact Muriel at [email protected].

Dutch Girl Quilt

Feb 09 2010

Angelina S. Carter’s Dutch Girl quilt was last seen at Wurtsmith Air Force Base during January 1991 when it was being packed into a moving box. Her mother made this full-size quilt for her in 1974 when she was seven years old. It is possible that the quilt may have been seen in Bayonne, New Jersey by anybody at the moving company where crates would have been loaded up onto a ship to go overseas. This was a military move and they know that the boxes were placed in crates and sealed in their front yard. The crates were not to be opened until they received them in their new home in England, however they know that some crates were opened because other things were missing and a desk was disassembled.

Each block has a white background . Angelina’s missing quilt looks very much a Sunbonnet Sue quilt but with black borders. Each dutch girl is made of different fabrics and hand appliqued. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted. If it has a label, it may have the name of her mother, Carole DiSanto. This is a full-size quilt that was made for Angelina when she was 6 or 7 years old.

If you’ve seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Angelina at [email protected] or [email protected]. Originally posted March 19, 2004. Updated February 9, 2010.

Recovered! Anna Hergert Quilts

Nov 24 2009
Meditation Scroll - Air

Meditation Scroll - Air

On September 21, 2009, Anna Hergert shipped a package containing four quilts. She shipped them from Oak Harbor, Washington to someone in Richland, Michigan. According to the shipping company’s records and the tracking information, the package was delivered and left on the front porch on September 24, 2009.

The recipeint told Anna that she had given the shipping company strict instructions NOT to leave anything on her front porch. The shipping company says they are not responsible for the loss, and therefore the insurance on the package is null and void.

Two months later, Anna was happy to report that the wall hangings had been recovered when the recipient found the quilts among other shipments in her house.

Anna writes, "I just received payment and am elated to share this positive outcome with you and your audience! Publishing the quilts as lost/stolen certainly helped resolve the matter!"

Appliqued Animals Crib Quilt

Mar 10 2008

Mike and Julia McGee are searching for a crib quilt that was made by Mike’s grandmother, Laura Welch, in 1947. The crib sized quilt features appiqued animals (possibly cats) in blue and white. It is hand pieced and hand quilted. The quilt was last seen in July 1972 in a laundrymat on the corner of Waverly and Jolly in Lansing, Michigan. It was taken from the dryer, along with several other handmade baby quilts, while Julia was tending several other loads and two children.

Julia writes, “I lost a quilt that both my mother and mother-in-law and I had all embroibered blocks for and one that an elderly neighbor hand pieced for my first baby. It was a tumbling block in bright colors. I believe there my have been others in that load but I can’t remember for sure. It broke my heart to lose them. We were in the process of moving and didn’t know what to do about the loss.”

Please contact Julia through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Double Diamond

May 10 2007

Double Diamond owned by Andrea Walker

Andrea Walker is hoping to recover two quilts made by her great-great-grandmother, Mary Malinda (Everett) Parish. One of the missing quilts is a Double Diamond pattern and the other is a Spider pattern. That is what they were called in an article that ran in the Detroit, Michigan newspaper sixty years ago. The only picture Andrea has of these quilts is from the newspaper clipping. She doesn’t even know what color they are, but she is hoping someone will recognize the name of the maker.

It is estimated that the quilts were made around 1875. They were in the possession of a great-great-aunt, Julia (Parish) Kraft, who died in 1945 in Michigan, leaving no children.

If you have any clues to the whereabouts of these quilts, please contact Andrea through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

It has a five blocks across and six blocks down for an overall size of approximately 66″ by 72″. The main colors are blue and red. It is machine pieced and machine quilted. A machine embroidered label says, “Hockey Quilt. Machine pieced, embroidered and quilted by Sharon Lemaire, Newberry, MI, for TAYHA, 11/2001.”

During August 2002, Sharon entered the quilt in a local fair. It was seen in the handiworks booth at 2 PM on the last day of the fair, but by 3 PM it was gone.

January 2007 two hockey-moms found the quilt in an antique store about one hundred miles away. They returned it to the hockey association and it was finally raffled off as originally inteneded.
