African Rock Quilts

Jan 15 2007

Dena Crain donated two quilts to the Trust for African Rock Art (http://www.africanrockart.org). The quilts were part of a traveling exhibition of African rock art. The car they were being transported in was involved a car crash on the road between Nairobi, Kenya, and either Arusha or Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. By the time the confusion cleared, the quilts were gone. These quilts were last seen sometime in 2005 or early 2006.

Le Grand Dieu by Dena Crain

This quilt is named “Le Grand Dieu.” The art quilt is based on a photograph of African rock art (used with permission) from the book, “African Rock Art,” by David Coulson and Alex Campbell. This quilt is 35″ high by 72″ long. The main colors are oranges and greys. The quilt incorporates is a fine netting with gold metallic painted gluespots as well as hand dyed and hand painted fabrics. The backgroud is quilted with variegated threads. This quilt has a label with Dena’s name sewn to the back, bottom right corner.

Les Girafes by Dena Crain

The quilt below is called “Les Girafes.” It is a whole-cloth quilt that is stenciled, hand dyed, and hand painted. The giraffes have a higher loft due to trapunto. It is machine quilted with variegated rayon and metallic threads. This 35″ high by 72″ quilt has a label on the back and the title, “Les Girafes,” might be spelled with two f’s instead of one.

Dena writes, “I know it’s a long shot, but I’m hoping whoever has them will try to sell them up through the market and they may eventually reappear.” If you find these quilts, please contact Dena through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Seasons of a Woman’s Life

Apr 16 2003

During July 2002, Janei Brockhausen’s house in Zondereinde, (Setaria) South Africa was broken into. Among the stolen items was her quilt, Seasons of a Woman’s Life. Another homemade quilt and a lot of winter clothing were stolen at the same time.

Seasons of a Woman’s Life is an original design featuring four seasonal blocks. One has a basket with applique flowers. One has a boat with sunflowers on a sea. One has a winter snowflake. The last one has autumn leaves falling across and down the block. The quilt has a 4-inch border that says, “Seasons of a Woman’s Life” in trapunto. Other blocks show times of a woman’s life from being a little girl with a dog, a dance with her first beau, her marriage, her first born in her arms, and all the way to the end as a grandmother in a rocking chair with a quilt over her lap.

The quilt is 65″ by 70″. The main colors are red, white and muslin. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted. She made it during 2000 and 2001. It does not have a label. The Brockhausen’s filed an insurance claim, but their company refused to compensate them for any of it, including their luggage.

If you’ve seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Janei at [email protected].

Two Quilts Lost by Airlines

Jul 02 2002

Bobby's Quilt by Jill Olver

Jill Olver of Higgens, ACT, Australia wanted to give each of her sisters-in-law a special gift when she visited them after a twenty year absence. She made each one an original quilt using traditional aborignial fabrics. She packed them in her suitcase for the flight to Zimbabwe. Sadly, her suitcase was lost by the airlines. It is believed the suitcase arrived in Johanesburg, but the connecting flight to Victoria Falls was cancelled and Jill was put on a different airline. The luggage never arrived even though it had been booked from Canberra to Victoria Falls.

Both quilts are about 60″ (1.5 meters) square. They are made with a variety of earth colors including traditional aboriginal fabrics. They were both made in 2002 and they have labels. Jill last saw her quilts on April 10, 2002.

If you can help, please contact Jill at [email protected].
