In 1971, for her fifth birthday, Kelly Smith was given an Orange, Brown and Black quilt, made especially for her by her grandmother. In 1978 it was stolen when her Bay City, Michigan house was robbed. Kelly writes, “[It is] really ugly, but it has sentimental value, and she died when I was 11 yrs old, and it was the only thing I got left of her. I miss it sooo much, and when I covered up with it, I could always feel her with me…It was beautiful to me, cause she made it for me.”
The full-size, hand-stitched quilt was made of simple blocks in bright oranges, browns and blacks along with some denims. It is very heavy and possibly has a blanket inside. It is tied with red yarn.
