Six Family Quilts

Cathy Nelson reports the theft of six quilts that were stolen from her father's home in December 2006. The stolen quilts include a double wedding ring with a yellow background, a single wedding ring, a log cabin, a fan quilt, a Dresden plate, and a bear claw. The quilts had been stored in her mother's cedar chest in their rural home in the area of Belleville, Wisconsin. The home was burglarized when her father was recovering from lyme disease in an assisted living home. The thieves took only valuable antiques.

All of the quilts are traditional designs and she believes they were all full bed size. The quilts were scrappy quilts dating from 1900 to 1929. All of them have muslin backgrounds except the double wedding ring with the yellow. All are backed with plain muslin and are hand pieced and hand quilted. Her grandmother used Morning Mist batting, so they are quite thin. She believes that her grandmother's initials, along with the date, are embroidered on the lower right front. Her initals were C.S. before marriage in 1905 and C.G. after marriage. All of the quilts were in pristine condition.
