Double Wedding Ring Quilt Stolen from Library
On October 3, 2002, between 5:15 PM and 9 PM, a Double Wedding Ring quilt was stolen from the Upper Arlington Public Library in Arlington, Ohio (a suburb of Columbus).
The library has been displaying a different quilt each month for several years with no problems. Each quilt is displayed hanging from a long, wooden, bar-type quilt rack that clamps down on the quilt like a pants hanger, eliminating the need for a sleeve. The rack is located high on the wall of a stairwell landing, leading downstairs to the library departments and meeting rooms. On the day of the theft, a clean-cut woman with streaked or frosted hair walked up to the rack, pulled down the quilt, and walked right out of the library. The casually dressed woman was between 35 and 40 years old. She appeared angry and was moving quickly. The quilt had only been on display a few hours when the theft occured. A witness assumed she was the owner and was unhappy with the way it was being displayed. At the time of the theft there were between fifteen and twenty staff members present in the library and as many as forty patrons.
The quilt is queen-sized, about 84" wide and somewhat longer in length. The background, bindings and the diamonds at the intersections of the rings are all pure white. The rings are made of brightly colored cotton prints from the 1970's. The quilt was made by hand in the late 1970's and early 1980's. It has an extensive amount of hand quilting including a flower and stem design quilted in the center of each ring. The quilt has never been washed and is like new. This quilt does not have a label.
A police report has been filed on this theft. The quilt owner's name is being withheld for security reasons. However, if you know anything about the theft of this quilt, please contact Nancy Fogle at [email protected].
