Recovered!
It's Pheasant Time and Mountain Greenery
On July 31, 2004, two of Caroline Clouse's quilts, "It's Pheasant Time" and "Mountain Greenery," came up missing from the North Dakota State Fair. The quilts had been taken down from display and laid on a table when they disappeared. A police report was filed. Later it was discovered that a friend's husband, trying to do a good deed, picked up the quilts without telling anyone. Because Caroline's friend was out of town at the time, Caroline was not informed until her friend returned and found them in the middle of her pile of quilts. The moral of this story is that show organizers need to be very careful and release the quilts only to the appropriate person! Thankfully, this instance had a very happy ending.
"It's Pheasant Time" was made from a commercial pattern, "Ring Necked Pheasant," Number 441, by Country Threads (picture used with permission). It is 19" by 27". The background is beige and the pheasant and border are made with a variety of fall-colored scrap fabrics. Caroline also hand quilted some grass and cattails in the background. In the sky she quilted two small silhouettes of pheasants as they are flying off.
"Mountain Greenery", not shown, was made using a pattern out of "Big Book of Quick Rotary Cutter Quilts," page 246, by Pam Bono, published by Oxmoor House. It is 45" by 60". It has a beige background, brown deer, evergreen trees, burgundy mountains, and blue sky. The border on the quilt is made of single evergreens in strips. It is machine pieced and machine quilted.
