Indigo Sea
Sometime between 2000 and 2002, this quilt, Indigo Sea, became missing from its home in Anchorage, Alaska. It is unclear what happened to the quilt. The owner had been in and out of the hospital, so the quilt may have been stored somewhere at home or with a friend. There were also many medical care providers in and out of the house during that time period.
The 72" by 82" quilt was made for James Derwent by Thelma Smith and Ernestine Derwent. The indigo and white quilt consists of 6" blocks. The indigo fabric is cotton sateen and the print is an Indonesian resist batik in a sea shell pattern. It is machine pieced and hand quilted in a Japanese water pattern. It may or may not have the date, 1995, marked in the lower left corner along with the signature, "quiltsmith."
The photo to the left shows a close up of Ernie's magnificent quilting.
If you can help with the recovery of this quilt, please contact Thelma at [email protected] or Ernestine at [email protected].
