Two Birgit Schüller Quilts Lost During Shipment
On July 8, 2005 Birgit Schüller carefully packaged two quilts designed especially for the 2005 Hoffman Challenge and airmailed them from Germany to California. Usually the trip takes three to five days, but the package did not arrived as expected and the post office could not locate it. Birgit waited for almost six weeks before the quilts finally made it to their destination!

Swarming Out
This paper-pieced, spiraling flying geese is 36.5" by 36.5". Birgit used bright batik fabrics for the geese, arranged in rainbow sequence. The background is black batik. There is also a 1" by 1" square of the Hoffman Challenge fabric in the center of the quilt.
Swarming Out has a computer-printed label that gives the details of the quilt along with Birgit's address and phone number. The label is hand-appliqued in the bottom left-hand corner of the back.

Winding Way
This original quilt is 42" long by 19.5" wide. It is made almost exclusively with brightly colored, 60 degree triangles in different sizes. On the bigger ones, Brigit experimented with fuzzy-cut curves which form the winding way. There are also stack-n-whack hexagons scattered around the center section featuring the 2005 Hoffman Challenge fabric.
This quilt is machine pieced and machine quilted. The detail shows the free motion quilt lines typical of this quilt. Birgit added a computer-printed label that gives the details of the quilt and her address and phone number. This label is also hand-appliqued in the bottom left-hand corner of the back.
