Two Quilts Stolen From an Artisan Market
In July 2001, Sandra Betts displayed her originally designed, handpainted and machine embroidered quilts at Market Quay, an artisan's market in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Two quilts have come up missing, presumably stolen from the booth unobserved by the attending staff. This occured sometime between July 1 and July 9.
Cliff Seneschal, shown on top, is 16" by 20" and was made in 2000 or 2001. It has a pale gree, handpainted background fabric with a tree in the foreground overhanging a bay with a sailboat and circling gulls. The old, gnarled tree is free motion embroidered over hand painting. The gull is also machine embroidered and the irregular edging is doen with free motion stitching. This quilt has a label embroidered on the back and was quilted through. There is a picture of a soaring gull on the label. The label says:

Riding the Winds is also an original design. The (approximately) 20" by 24" quilt has a blue moire border, dark blue sea, and a blue, white and pink sky. It depicts a seascape featuring gulls soaring over a stormy sea with rocks in the foreground. This quilt also features machine embroidered gulls. The scene is surrounded with raffia and seaweed-like ribbon. There are stones and shells attached to the rocky area at the base of the scene. The label says:
