Amish Ocean Waves
Here's another case of a missing quilt involving the US Postal Service. In November 1993 a Tennessee quilter sent an Amish Ocean Waves quilt from Chattanooga to her brother-in-law in Seattle, Washington. USPS records show that the apartment manager signed for the package but the manager says he didn't.
"I got a statement from my brother-in-law that the package never arrived, and filed for the insurance money from the USPS. Per their instructions, the insured amount was calculated by estimating only the material cost of the quilt, since I did not have an appraisal. This was a paltry amount considering the time that went into making a king size quilt. I was paid, but they investigated the lost package and finally told me that the apartment manager had signed for it. The apartment manager denied any involvement with the disappearance of the package. It was purportedly left in the apartment mail drop area. Since the post office had proof that the package made it to the delivery address, they demanded their insurance payment back, adding insult to injury. I made another quilt for my brother-in-law, but he took this one back to Seattle with him on the plane in a carry-on!"
The missing quilt has a solid black background with multicolored calico triangles and a rose border and binding. It is 110" by 110" and is machine pieced. It was machine quilted in a diagonal criss-cross pattern of approximately 4" squares using a decorative zigzag stitch.
