Lois made this quilt in 2012 for her son-in-law, Ryan Wright, in honor of his graduation. Lois shipped the quilt on March 14, 2013 from Hemet, California. The quilt was professionally packed and addressed by a third party vendor. It was supposed to arrive in Ithaca, New York on March 21. The shipping company says it was delivered to the front door at 12:05 PM. Lois believes the quilt may have been delivered to the wrong place, since their apartment is on the side of the house and doesn’t have a front door. If it had been delivered to the front door, it would have been received by their landlady. Another possibility is it could have been stolen from the porch.
On April 22, Lois reported the wonderful news, “My lost quilt has been found! A woman purchased the quilt from a store in Ithaca where someone had sold it to the shop owner. She was able to obtain my son in law’s email address from someone on Facebook. She contacted him and he met her yesterday to receive his quilt. If it hadn’t been for the label on the quilt, our son in law would never have been identified and the quilt returned to him. We are thankful the woman did the right thing and returned the quilt! He received it yesterday, one month after it had been incorrectly delivered to the wrong address and stolen from the front porch (I believe) of the landlady. Miracles do happen!!”
Lois used the pattern found in Eleanor Burns book, Egg Money Quilts, to make this 112″ by 112″ quilt. The flowers on the front of the quilt are two shades of red, both in the same design. The background is white with a leafy scroll design. The binding was the darker of the two red fabrics. The backing of the quilt is Michael Miller’s Fairy Frost fabric in white. The quilt was professionally machine quilted with red thread.
This quilt has a label on the bottom right corner of the back of the quilt. It says words similar to this: “Garden Walk quilt was made for our son in law, Ryan Wright, as a graduation present. He is graduating from Cornell University in May 2013 with his MLA (Masters in Landscape Architecture). Ryan chose the colors for the quilt. This quilt was made in Hemet, California by Lois Leader and given with lots of love to Ryan by Lois and Bill Leader. The quilt was machine quilted by Karen Gehring.” The label was attached by hand stitching with the feather stitch.
