Field of Sunflowers

Katherine Salter is asking for help recovering a quilt she made for her mother, Rena Butt. The quilt was last seen in early 2010 at Chateau Gardens nursing home in Parkhill, Ontario, Canada. It was stored in her mother’s assigned closet space at the nursing home where she resided until she passed away in June 2011. It disappeared from her closet and the family was told it had been moved to “storage.” When her mother passed, the staff could not locate the quilt. They have no explanation for its disappearance and suggested it might have gone home with another family or been discarded when staff was attempting to reduce the number of belongings stored by residents.

This is a twin-size, multi-colored quilt with sunflower prints. It was made in 2004 from a pattern from a M’Liss Rae Hawley book, Fat Quarters. It has a label with her mother’s name on it. She may have called the quilt “Field of Sunflowers” or something similar. The label is sewn into the binding on two sides and the remainder is blindstitched.

Katherine writes, “I made this quilt for my mother when, due to ill health, she had to move into a facility providing constant medical care. She had always loved sunflowers and I wanted to give her something that would not only brighten her day, but also remind her of how grateful I am for all she taught me (including quilting). She taught me about the love you can place in every stitch — every patch — and I wanted her to have that around her. As such, this quilt has enormous sentimental value — particularly in light of her recent death.”
