Fall Leaves Quilt

Apr 05 2011

Jackie Briggs wonders if anyone found her long-lost quilt. It was made by her grandmother or possibly great-grandmother. She last saw it in 1981 in Colorado. It was left in a chest which her father had made. There was a burlap covering, and other momentos were in the chest including items from her wedding and an old camera. It was left behind at a friend’s house when she had to move, but they do not remember what happened to the chest.

The quilt is tan on one side and brown on the other. Autumn-colored leaves are on the tan side. It is approximately full-size. It is hand stitched with a diamond pattern and the year 1937 or possibly 1837 is embroidered in a corner with the name. It had won a blue ribbon in the LA Fair.

If you found this quilt, please contact Jackie at jackiebrn@comcast.net.

Oct 01 2010

Ohio Star by Teresa Fusco

Ohio Star by Teresa Fusco

Teresa Fusco of Reading, Pennsylvania was traveling, lecturing, teaching, and exhibiting her work from Washington, DC to Northern New Jersey when she realized this quilt was missing.

The 75″ by 75″ Ohio Star is a beginner’s rotary cutting sample quilt used for teaching. Teresa had just finished the quilting and sleeve, but she doesn’t think it had a label on the quilt yet. The Rotary Cutting Pattern can be found in the book “Block Party”.

The backgrounds are pale pink and tan nine patches and medium pink border triangles. The Border is dark navy blue/black. The visual block design is large Ohio stars in navy and browns with smaller stars in navy tan/browns as the middle blocks. Teresa first noticed the quilt missing in November 1999.

There is a reward for the return of this quilt – no questions asked. If you have any information regarding this quilt, please contact Teresa at teresasquiltstudio@gmail.com.

Recovered! World War II Quilts

Aug 19 2010

Navy Insignia Quilt

Navy Insignia Quilt

On August 17, Sue Reich asked for help locating four missing World War II Quilts. Sue found out that these quilts went missing between 12:30 and 3:30 AM on August 11 at the shipping company’s facility in Keasbey, New Jersey. The quilts were at the Asheville Quilt Show in Asheville, North Carolina on August 6-8 2010. Four trunks of quilts were shipped back to Sue in New Jersey. Three of the four trunks returned home safely. Sadly, the fourth trunk was delivered empty. There were four World War II quilts in that trunk, along with a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt which Sue used as a table cover.

On August 18, Sue received a call from Brenda S. from the FedEx Customer Service Center in Memphis, TN. Sue wrote, “Brenda has the most heavenly voice I have ever heard. Brenda told me early on the Wednesday morning she received a call from someone in the quilt world who preferred to remain anonymous. This person told Brenda about the quilts and their importance, beseeching her to help find them. Brenda told me she was so moved that she made it her mission to find the quilts. Sometime in the afternoon, the quilts were delivered in an unmarked cardboard box to a FedEx facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. (FedEx’s lost and found items either go to Memphis or Salt Lake City.) The box arrived with no tracking number making it impossible to trace. Sharon at the Salt Lake facility didn’t even have them cataloged yet but she sent Brenda a picture, and Brenda called me to confirmed the identity of at least one of the quilts.”

On August 19, Sue was thrilled that the quilts were all safely returned! They had been overnighted to her from Salt Lake City, and they arrived at 11:30 AM. Sue writes, “Words cannot express my gratitude to the quilt world for helping to find these quilts. It took a Quilt APB to locate them but it worked. Congratulations to all of you and specifically to the very special person who interceded in my behalf. This experience has convinced me that I need to continue to share these quilts because of their historic importance.”

All of these quilts were made between 1941 and 1945, and they all have Sue’s name and address on hanging sleeves.

Night Shift Worker’s Quilt is an original quilt that is 68″ by 78.5″. The main colors are red, white, and blue. It is made of home dec fabrics and silks that read, “Quiet Please Night Shift Worker Sleeping, Thank You.” It is machine pieced and hand quilted.

Canadian Red Cross Quilt is a wholecloth quilt that is 63.5″ by 72″. It is made from four feed sacks sewn together. It is hand pieced and hand quilted. The main color is blue.

Navy Insignia Quilt is a 64″ by 88″ quilt made of Navy insignia patches. It is machine pieced and machine quilted.

Hazleton Fund Raising Quilt is 66″ by 84″. The main colors are white, white, and red. It is hand embroidered with hundreds of names. This quilt was made in 1942-1943.

If you there is anything you can do for the recovery if these quilts, please contact Sue at suereich@charter.net.

Elegance by Kris Gregson Moss

Kris Gregson Moss is hoping to recover her original quilt, “Elegance.” It was last seen in April 2010 at the Robin Alexander Gallery in Kent, Connecticut. The gallery owner says she mailed it back to Kris via uninsured, untracked parcel post, but it never arrived. Kris has had the shipping company search for the quilts, but nothing has been found so far. She also sent a certified letter to the gallery owner but received no response.

This original quilt, made in 2007, is 22″ wide by 51″ high. It has a beige background with rectangles of mainly turquoise fabrics. The quilt is machine appliqued and machine quilted. The turquoise pieces are embellished with beading and couched with crocheted aqua yarn. There is a label sewn to the back of the quilt on the hanging sleeve with Kris’s name.

If you find this quilt, please contact Kris at kris@krisgregsonmoss.com.

Hearts

Oct 27 2009

Rebecca Dakan would like to recover a 30" square quilt that she made in 1990. It was last seen during July 1995 in Santa Cruz, California. It was tacked to the wall when their house was for sale. One day it was removed from the wall and stolen.

This quilt has a center panel with sixteen hearts (four across and four down). The hearts are in dark reds, navy blues, and tan. Their is a small border in tan dots on red, and a slightly larger border of navy blue with little ivory stylized flowers, and another larger border in dark red with an ivory diagonal design. The final border is more hearts which formed the selvage of the original fabric. Rebecca pieced them together to form a full border on all sides. This was the first quilt that Rebecca hand quilted.

Please contact Rebecca at rdakan@pacbell.net if you have found this quilt.

Recovered! Memories of Dad and Florida

Apr 16 2009

Memories of Dad and Flordia by Sue Schutz

Memories of Dad and Flordia by Sue Schutz

Susan Schutz was missing a quilt that she thought was mistakenly put in a donation pile. She last saw the quilt, “Memories of Dad and Florida,” in San Diego, California during the summer of 2008.

In April 2009 Sue was joyfully reunited with the quilt. She writes, “Thank you! Indirectly you helped me find my quilt. After I posted the information with you and you so kindly got it uploaded I was more compelled to talk about the missing quilt. It turns out that a family member had it hidden away and suddenly felt guilty about keeping it. They did not realize how emotionally important the quilt was to me. It was suddenly returned.”

The quilt is a large lap size, predominantly blues and bright tropical colors. Some of the fabrics have fish, skies, and water. The block squares are assembled in the lengthwise direction of the blanket, so when the quilt is laying long the back of a sofa you can see the pictures. It is machine pieced and machine quilted. It has a label on the back which says something like, “For Dad with love from Susie 2004.”

Elijah's Quilt, Boogie

Elijah's Quilt, Boogie

The quilt that Shelece Jorgensen made for her son, Elijah Himes, was missing. Elijah’s quilt, “Boogie”, was last seen in Southern Utah, Moab, during the summer of 2005. Ever since that time, her son talked about the quilt and asked her to make him a new one with the exact fabrics.

Happily, not long before her son’s 12th birthday, and acquaintance emailed her and said they had a kids-sized blanket with triangles all over it, and the wondered if it might be hers. After confirmation that it was indeed Elijah’s quilt, it was mailed to her. Shelece wrapped it up and gave it to her son for his birthday. He was overwhelmed and so excited!

Obama Inauguration Scarf and Tunic

Feb 03 2009

Michele Hardman is hoping to recover a scarf and tunic/poncho which she commissioned Susan Shie to create for the Obama Inauguration. They were last seen on January 29, 2009 when they were checked in at Customs Hall at the O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, transferring to Austin, Texas on American Airlines, Flight # AA2293. She was charged extra because the bag is oversized and overweight. At the time she was told that if the bag was not on her flight that it would be on the next flight. However, it didn’t arrive on either flight.

[nggallery id=25]

A missing luggage report has been filed, both with the Austin airport authorities as well as the Chicago O’Hare authorities. The missing bag is a black, oversized duffle bag with roller wheels on one end. Michele was told that if the luggage was not retrieved within five days, all unclaimed bags would go to a central baggage area in Dallas.

The scarf (sections shown above left) is about 6-8 ft long and about 1 ft wide. The rectangular tunic/poncho (front and back shown to right) is about 3 ft by 5 ft. The main colors are Democratic blue and yellow, which blend into green, along with black outlines. The scarf and tunic are airbrush painted. They were made in January 2009. They are signed by Susan Shie directly on each piece with paint.

Earlier in a separate incident, Michele also had another political piece come up missing. It is a piece called “Dems Win Big in 2004″ (below left), also by Susan Shie. It was hung at an office of a campaign staff member in Chicago’s Volunteer Headquarters from 2007-2008. When the office closed, she didn’t return to the office in time to retrieve it.

Please contact Michele at michele.hardman@gmail.com.
