Log Cabin Pine Trees

Jul 26 2002

In 2000 Julie Gilchrist made a Log Cabin Pine Trees quilt using 18 different green prints and a blue-gray mottled background. In 2001 a thief stole the quilt out of her car along with her stereo/CD player. She believes they used the quilt to cover up the stereo when they stole it. The car was parked in Sacramento, California when the theft occurred. The quilt is 48″ by 60″. The binding had been sewn on but was not completely hand-stitched yet. The trees are set on point. The backing is a navy and green plaid while the binding is green with a gold plaid printed on it.

Please contact Julie at jgilchrist@jps.net if you find this quilt.

Pennsylvania Hex

Pennsylvania Hex by Brenda Kalata

Pennsylvania Hex by Brenda Kalata

Can you help Brenda Kalata recover a missing Pennsylvania Hex quilt which she gave to her daughter, Beth Ethridge? The quilt was last seen during the summer of 1994 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was stolen from a parked car. Brenda writes, “While I realize that this quilt has probably been sold and resold many times – in tatters by now – I’d like to know if anyone has seen it since its disappearance.”

This quilt was made from a pattern published in the April 1965 issue of Woman’s Day. The pattern was recreated from a pre-1900 quilt that is owned by the Historical Society of York County, York, Pennsylvania. The quilt top was hand pieced by E. McCarter (who was a New York Bradway costume designer) and was hand quilted by Brenda. The quilt top was given to Brenda on July 8, 1984 and Brenda gave it to her middle daughter as a wedding gift. The top was made around 1966 to 1970 and it was quilted in 1990. It is 72″ by 100″. The main colors are red, yellow and green on a bright white background. The cotton red and yellow, six-pointed blocks are surrounded by pieced diamonds to create hexagons. Traditional “feathered circles” or “feather wreaths” are quilted in every white hexagon.

If you can help, please contact Brenda at brenkal1@yahoo.com.

Denim Quilt Stolen From Car

Oct 19 2001

Denim Quilt

Denim Quilt

“Nailhead” is looking for a denim quilt that she made as her children were growing up. It was stolen from her husband’s car on Christmas Eve 1999. The car was parked outside the Holiday Inn in Hastings, Nebraska.

This denim quilt is very large; large enough to cover a king-size bed and have the ends touch the floor. “Nailhead” estimates it is approximately 144″ by 120″. There are various sizes of patches, all made from denim blue jeans. Towards the center of the quilt there are two large patches of thin, dark denim, each about the same size. These were the first two patches and over the years more were added as her children outgrew their jeans. Near the center of the quilt there is some embroidery. The back of the quilt is a cotton/poly blend. It is brown with small navy blue rectangle bars placed in a square. The quilt was tied with yarn and some of the ties were beginning to break when the quilt was stolen.

She writes, “This quilt was to be a family treasure. Now I have a grandson and would treasure using the quilt for family outings with him.”

Can you help find this quilt? If so, please contact “Nailhead” at Nailhead78@aol.com.

Marjorie Phillips Quilts

Mar 16 2001

Marjorie Phillips has reported that several quilts which she made for her daugher, Sophia Phillips, and her grandson were stolen. On December 10, 1997 her daughter loaded up a U-Haul truck in Las Vegas, Nevada with all of her possessions including these quilts. The packed van was parked out in front of her house so they could leave early in the morning. During the night a thief hot wired the van and stole everything they owned. After this experience, Marjorie recommends that others remove the coil from the engine compartment of any packed truck if it is left standing, especially if others saw you loading the truck. The van was eventually located, but only odds and ends were left.

The major loss, in terms of quilted items, was a queen sized quilt which she made for her grandson, Bradley. This quilt is called “Bars and Beasts”. It has a matching dust ruffle, a matching smaller TV quilt (second photo) and a pillow. The larger quilt is 95″ by 76″ and was made in 1996. Bradley’s name and birthdate were quilted in the middle of this quilt. The TV quilt is 36″ by 36″. The colors of both of these quilts are strong primary colors and both are hand quilted.

Another quilt that was stolen was a Modified Nine Patch (a Trudi Hughes design). This is a large double bed size quilt and was a birthday gift for Sophia’s 25th birthday. It is a machine pieced, scrappy quilt with a very high loft batting.

There was also a 34″ by 34″ wall hanging which was made for a quilt challenge in 1990 and it won an honorable mention. The challenge was to use a dark, striped fabric. Marjorie made this quilt with nine pinwheel blocks in a spool setting. It is machine pieced and hand quilted. All quilts were labeled.

The best part of this whole experience was that Marjorie had documented her quilts, complete with photos, sizes, and other background information. This was invaluable to her for insurance purposes. Naturally, they would much rather retreive the quilts. If you can help, please contact Marjorie at Quiltermp@aol.com

200 Child-Sized Donation Quilts

Jan 09 2001

Lisa Brunstetter has reported that 200 child-size quilts were stolen from her car during December 1997. Around 1 PM on a Monday, she had stopped at the Marley Station Mall to pick up a Christmas gift. In the back seat of her car were trash bags full of quilts that were to be donated to hospitalized children. When she returned, the window had been broken and the quilts and several other things had been stolen.

The theft was reported in the local paper, but never found. There were about 200 small quilts ranging from 36-inches to 50-inches in dimension.

Lisa believes the thief may have just “dumped” the quilts when they found out what they had stolen, but she holds out hope that they can still be recovered. If you have any information about these quilts, please contact Lisa at LBRUNSTE@arinc.com.
