Giraffe and Animals

Giraffe and Animals by Robin Hansen

Giraffe and Animals by Robin Hansen

Robin Hansen Buchholz hopes to find a quilt that has been missing since Spring 1993. It was last seen at Tillamook Junior High School during a show-and-tell session. Her daughter brought it to her eighth grade class for a report on pioneers. She took an antique crazy quilt throw, an example of an Hawaiian quilt square in blue and white, an appliqud quilt top of a dinosaur sitting on an egg, and an embroidered quilt wall hanging we called my “Giraffe Quilt”. This was a quilt that I had dreamed of doing. I woke up one night about 2am in the mid-1980′s, after seeing this quilt in a dream. It would use up all the whimsical patterns from cards that my boyfriend in high school had sent me when I was laid up from a bike accident. It had a large giraffe in the middle, surrounded by animals and flowers all embroidered mostly in satin stitch. It had the first lines from “All things bright and beautiful!” poem on the quilt.

Please contact Robin at smakagemor@yahoo.com if you have this quilt.

Recovered! Memories of Dad and Florida

Apr 16 2009

Memories of Dad and Flordia by Sue Schutz

Memories of Dad and Flordia by Sue Schutz

Susan Schutz was missing a quilt that she thought was mistakenly put in a donation pile. She last saw the quilt, “Memories of Dad and Florida,” in San Diego, California during the summer of 2008.

In April 2009 Sue was joyfully reunited with the quilt. She writes, “Thank you! Indirectly you helped me find my quilt. After I posted the information with you and you so kindly got it uploaded I was more compelled to talk about the missing quilt. It turns out that a family member had it hidden away and suddenly felt guilty about keeping it. They did not realize how emotionally important the quilt was to me. It was suddenly returned.”

The quilt is a large lap size, predominantly blues and bright tropical colors. Some of the fabrics have fish, skies, and water. The block squares are assembled in the lengthwise direction of the blanket, so when the quilt is laying long the back of a sofa you can see the pictures. It is machine pieced and machine quilted. It has a label on the back which says something like, “For Dad with love from Susie 2004.”

Dutch Doll Quilt

Apr 16 2009

Sallie Thalhimer last saw her quilt in 1986. She gave it to someone in Richmond, Virginia to have it repaired, but she has lost contact with that person and no longer has their name. She thinks it was a young man who was possibly a student in VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University). The quilt had been made by her great-grandmother. It is a double-size Dutch Doll quilt. It was made from remnants from children’s dresses which her grandmother had made for her mother as a little girl. The main colors were primary blues, reds, and yellows. It was made in 1936.

Please contact Sallie through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page if you have information about this quilt.

Recovered! The Bluest Eye

Feb 16 2009

The Bluest Eye by Susan Brubaker Knapp

The Bluest Eye by Susan Brubaker Knapp

Susan Brubaker Knapp needed help recovering her quilt, “The Bluest Eye.” It was last seen in December 2008 in Chicago, Illinois. The quilt had been on display at Obama’s Columbus, Ohio headquarters for most of 2008. In December it was shipped back to Susan, but to the wrong address. The shipping company returned it to the sender, but it never arrived.

In February 2009, Susan reported the quilt was found and returned safely. It had been returned to the sender due to an incorrect zip code, and the sender’s husband received it, but neglected to tell his wife. Thankfully, the quilt was recovered and immediately shipped to the correct address.

“The Bluest Eye” is 12″ by 12″ and was made in 2007. It is an original design incorporating batiks and hand-dyed cottons. It is machine pieced, machine appliqued, threadpainted, and machine quilted. The quilt has a label on the back with the quilt name and Susan’s name.

Susan designed this quilt for the 2008 Quilting Arts magazine calendar competion. It was a finalist in the competition, and was given a Judges Choice award. It also appeared in the August/September 2007 issue of Quilting Arts magazine. Susan writes, “The competition had the theme ‘A Novel Idea,’ and artists were asked to create quilts about their favorite books. Mine is based on Toni Morrison’s novel about an African-American girl growing up in horrible violence, her descent into madness, and her dream to have blue eyes like Shirley Temple so she would be accepted and loved. For this piece, I sketched the eye from photos I had taken of my blue-eyed daughter and of one of her African-American classmates. I made patterns from the sketch, then fused hundreds of small pieces of fabric down and heavily thread painted it before quilting.”

Elijah's Quilt, Boogie

Elijah's Quilt, Boogie

The quilt that Shelece Jorgensen made for her son, Elijah Himes, was missing. Elijah’s quilt, “Boogie”, was last seen in Southern Utah, Moab, during the summer of 2005. Ever since that time, her son talked about the quilt and asked her to make him a new one with the exact fabrics.

Happily, not long before her son’s 12th birthday, and acquaintance emailed her and said they had a kids-sized blanket with triangles all over it, and the wondered if it might be hers. After confirmation that it was indeed Elijah’s quilt, it was mailed to her. Shelece wrapped it up and gave it to her son for his birthday. He was overwhelmed and so excited!

Dec 12 2008

Jared's T-shirt Quilt by Janetta Carpenter

Jared's T-shirt Quilt by Janetta Carpenter

Jeanette Carpenter would like to find the memory t-shirt quilt that she made for her son, Jared. The quilt was last seen on February 5, 2008 in a Union University dorm room in Jackson, Tennessee when a tornado ripped through student housing. Since they were not allowed to enter into the dorms to retrieve items, they do not know if it is still there or if it was swept away in the storm.

This twin size quilt was made from her son’s memorable t-shirts. The quilt was hand tacked, not quilted. It was made in 2005. It has a label sewn to the back corner with Jeanette’s name.

Please contact Jeanette through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page if you’ve seen this quilt.
