A Day At the Beach by Mary Leahy

This quilt was stolen from Heartbeat Quilts in Hyannis, Massachusetts on Cape Cod on July 15, 2003. “A Day at the Beach” was made by Mary Leahy. It is the cover quilt of the pattern with the same name. This one is the original quilt made before the pattern was sold commercially.

And now we have a happy ending!!! On July 8, 2011 this quilt was returned to Heartbeat Quilts along with a note of apology stating that the person who stole it has sought help for her problems.

This is a small lap quilt with appliqued summer motifs including a lobster, crab, beach chair, beach ball, umbrella, fish, scallop shell, lighthouse, whale, fish, and two starfish. It is machine appliqued onto a light blue background. The alternating blocks are light blue, yellow and teal pinwheels. The hand quilted and machine pieced quilt is 38″ by 50″. It was made in 2000.

Jennifer Nelson would like to recover her quilt, Moose Crossing. It was a shop sample and was on display in the upstairs hallway at The Shoppes at Calef’s Corner in Barrington, New Hampshire. It was stolen during Fall 2008. This quilt was made from a pattern by Prairie Grove Peddler. It is approximately 26″ x 34″. The main colors are greens and browns. Jennifer used Thimbleberries fabrics to create this machine appliqued quilt. It was made in 2008.

Home is Where the Heart Is

Frances V. Dunn was hoping to recover her "Home is Where the Heart Is" quilt which was last seen on September 22, 2009. It being displayed as part of a trunk show at Quilts on Broadway, a quilt shop in Belgrade Montana. The quilts were returned to Frances in five separate boxes, but this quilt top was not included among them.

Thankfully, this quilt was found again during December 2009!

School Quilt

Frances V. Dunn is asking for help in locating her "School Quilt" which was last seen on September 22, 2009. It was last seen at Quilts on Broadway, a quilt shop in Belgrade, Montana. Frances did a quilt showing there, but when it was time for them to return her quilts, this quilt never came back.

This quilt uses the traditional school house block design. The main colors are beige and multicolors. It was hand pieced and hand quilted in 2009.

Sudoku Vegetables

Sue Olson would like to retrieve her Sudoku Vegetables quilt top. It was on a sample sale table in the Pieces Quilt Shop in Renton, Washington when it disappeared. The quilt top was last seen in May 2008.

This quilt top is about 60" by 78". It is designed using the Sudoku number puzzle. There are nine vegetable prints with a different print in each row and column. This machine pieced quilt top has black sashing and a red-and-white checked border with little black ants. It was made in 2008.

Betty Alofs needed help locating her a quilt that went missing from a quilt shop in Lakeside, California in March 2008. She suspected it might have been picked up by a shopper, or a student in gathering their supplies after class.

In July 2008 Betty wrote, “I am happy to say it came home!”

Diamond Demo by Jan King

Jan King’s quilt was last seen on June 20, 2008 at the Kingston Quilt Shop in Kingston, Washington. The quilt was taken during the annual Western Washington Shop Hop. Also taken was the Prairie Sky brochure and possibly also batting templates.

This 45″ square quilt is a completed demo that Jan uses to teach classes at the shop. It is from a commercial pattern, “Fun and Done! Easy Diamonds” pattern by Prairie Sky. Jan’s quilt uses dull peach, browns, and lavender. It features fabric from the Henry Glass ‘Tapestry’ collection.

Monet’s Wedding Ring

During January 2007 a lap-size quilt, “Monet’s Wedding Ring”, was stolen out of the Grinnell FiberWorks Quilt Shop in Grinnell, Iowa.

The 60″ by 60″ was made by Lisa Henderson as a store sample during the Winter of 2006. The pattern she used is seen on the upper left hand corner of Judy Martin’s book, Scraps. Lisa’s quilt has a mustard background and uses fabrics from the Kaffe Fasset’s Cloisonne collection (left). Main colors include black, fuschias, and a turquoise print. It is machine pieced and machine quilted.

Pastel Sampler Quilt

Marica Odom is hoping to recover her pastel sampler quilt. In December 2006 she brought the pieced top, backing and batting to a quilt shop so it could be quilted. The quilter went out of the room to get change for a customer and when she returned the quilt materials were missing. The customer was not contacted because they were a new customer. Others were contacted, but no one knew anything about the missing quilt.

This machine pieced quilt is approximately 60″ by 72″. The blocks used include Rail Fence, Double Nine Patch, Shoo Fly, Monkey Wrench, Jacob’s Ladder, Ohio Star, Card Trick, Lily, Star in a Star, Wedding Ring, Bear’s Paw, and Drunkard’s Path. The main colors are pastel pink, blue, green, and lavendar, shown in the fabric swatch to the left. It has a yellow border.

Lorraine M. Kalisz hopes to recover a raffle quilt she made for a fundraiser for the C.T. Plunkett Elementary School Library of Adams, Massachussetts. It was last seen on September 13, 2005 at Tala’s Quilt Shop, Heritage Park, North Adams, Massachussetts. It was on display on a quilt rack in order to sell raffle tickets. Some time between September 13 and 14 someone entered the shop after hours and stole the quilt. No other quilt was missing and no money was taken. A police report was filed but it was never recovered. The quilt shop made a replacement quilt for the raffle.

This is a queen size quilt, approximately 84″ by 96″. The main colors are rich reds, blues, blacks and neutrals. Most of the fabrics are reproduction Civil War prints. Thirty different prints were used (shown below). Lorraine used a quilt pattern called Nite-Nite by U Can 2, Quick and Easy Quilts by Eileen Sullivan. It was finished in December 2004 and there is no label.
