Family Baby Clothes Quilt

Nov 15 2000

Pam Burkland made a queen-sized quilt for her daughter using fabric from her childrens baby and toddler clothes which she had carefully saved for years. The backing is navy with tiny white hearts. The backing wraps around to the from and is piped in kelly green. The quilt was being hand quilted in kelly green. The blocks were no specific pattern except for an x-shape in the center using a bright green with pink and yellow medium sized flowers. This same fabric was used as a block in each corner of the quilt. On the edges, Pam had used a sunny golden block and she embroidered “To Ingrid”, the date, and “Love, Mom.”

The quilt was either stolen out of a storage space in Mountain View, California in 1994-1995 or out of a storage space in Portland, Oregon in 1995-1996. In Portland, it is possible that it was misplaced during the move of the household out of the storage space and down several floors to the truck.

Pam says, “I have been heart-broken over this loss and so is my daughter. I am planning to make another quilt for her but it can never replace the one with all their baby clothes fabrics in it.”

Can anyone help Pam find this quilt? Please contact her at pamburkland@aol.com or burkla@us.ibm.com if you have any information you can give her.

Family Tree Quilt

Jul 25 2000

Anita Wetherill has been working on a Family Tree quilt for the last six years. While she was traveling she carried the unfinished quilt in a forest green and navy canvas bag with a black shoulder strap. The bag looks similar to a soft briefcase that would be used for carrying a laptop computer. On June 23, 2000 around 3:30 to 4:30 PM, the bag was stolen while she was waiting for a flight in the Philadelphia Airport Terminal.

This family tree was for the Smith family who has been holding family reunions every two years since the late 1940s. Anita was on the way to the reunion in Green Lake, Wisconsin when the bag containing the quilt top was stolen.

The unfinished quilt top featured an appliqued tree trunk and some appliqued leaves with signatures of family members. Individual six-inch squares made by each family member were also in the bag.

Anita says, “Unfortunately, I am sure that whoever took it thought that he/she was getting a laptop computer or something more valuable that some fabric and it ended up in a dumpster somewhere. However, stranger things have happened than the possibility of it reappearing!”

Anita is offering a reward for the return of her quilt top. If you have any information about this quilt, please contact Anita at alw617@gateway.net.

Jacob’s Ladder Quilt

Apr 14 2000

Jacob's Ladder by Wilma Eichler

Jacob's Ladder by Wilma Eichler

Wilma Eichler made this beautiful Jacob’s Ladder quilt for her grandson. After the unexpected death of her grandson’s father, Wilma was told that the quilt had been donated to a Salvation Army in the Mansfield, Ohio area sometime in early 1999.

It is a full size quilt and is signed in Pigma pen on the back. The label says something like “Think of me when you sleep under this quilt.” Wilma signed it directly onto the muslin backing.

The quilt is done in navy blues and muslin. The darker blue fabric which is repeated in the border reminded Wilma of fish eggs. The blocks are made of pieces which are approximately 2″ square.

It took Wilma a year to hand quilt this quilt and she would love to recover this quilt so she can give it back to her grandson. If you have any information about this quilt, please contact Wilma at wilma@charter.net.

Daniel’s Baby Quilt

Mar 22 2000

Daniel's Baby Quilt by Bonnie Comar

Daniel's Baby Quilt by Bonnie Comar

Bonnie Comar made this quilt for her grandsons first birthday. It is her own original variation of the Bear Paw block.

The quilt is made of two 12-inch blocks with gold and white paws and two 12-inch blocks with gold and red paws. The center square has a teddy bear on a rocking horse which was painted, embroidered and appliqud. The background is navy blue. The borders are red and blue stripes with nine patch blocks at the intersections. The quilt is bound with gold binding. The quilt was labeled “Daniel Timothy Comar” and “Love Grandma.” These were embroidered on the back along with “Colorado” and his birthday, “March 12, 1993.”

Daniels baby quilt had been placed in a storage unit called U Store It in Linden, New Jersey. When the rent was not paid on the storage unit, the contents were sold at auction. There was also a Christmas tree wall quilt about 20″ by 20″ with buttons, but Bonnie really wants to find Daniels quilt.

Navy Blue Log Cabin Jacket

Feb 01 2000

Log Cabin Jacket by Joan McClaren

Log Cabin Jacket by Joan McClaren

Joan McClaren lost her handmade log cabin jacket about four years ago (approximately 1996?) in the Santa Barbara area of California She believes she may have accidentally left it on a chair. The jacket was made with navy blue fabrics with 6-inch log cabin blocks. Sketch of jacket and fabrics used are shown to the right. The jacket had navy blue lining with a tiny pink flower print. All fabrics were 100% cotton.

She does have scraps of the fabric so she can positively identify the jacket, but it does not have a label. The sleeves were made with extra length so they could be rolled up to form cuffs. The jacket has wooden buttons.

Quilt Tops

Dec 22 1999

Margot McDonnell reports that she has lost two quilt tops. She had sent them to Lancaster for hand quilting about three years ago.

One had all the presidents through Clinton embroidered in navy with some other squares with presidential symbols going through diagonally. The sashing was red and white stripes with stars.

The second quilt top was a clamshell charm done in shades ranging from off-white to dark rust.

She had wanted these special quilts to be given the Amish treatment so she could present each one to a family member. Apparently they were stolen in the mail. They were sent via US mail.

If you know anything about this quilt, please contact Margot at m5.jersey.juno.com.
