Crazy Patch Quilt Top

Aug 30 2010

Crazy Patch Quilt owned by Muriel Fitzgerald Jones

Crazy Patch Quilt owned by Muriel Fitzgerald Jones

Muriel D. Fitzgerald Jones is asking for help locating a crazy patch quilt top that was given to her by her mother sometime between 1978-1980. Her mother brought it to Souderton, Pennsylvania between 1980-1985 where she knew someone who could replace a few torn fabrics. At the time, Muriel was unaware that her mother was in the beginning stages of dementia. Now no one knows if the quilt top was ever returned or picked up. An ad was placed in a local paper around 2007 with no response. When Muriel’s parents sold their house in 1993, they hired two women to empty it and clean it, with the idea that they could take anything they wanted. If the quilt top had been returned, it is unknown if one of these women might have taken it or possibly even thrown it away.

Muriel believes this quilt top was made between 1900-1940 by her maternal grandmother and her family. It is a double size quilt top made mostly of fancy dress fabric scraps, including silk-like and velvets. She recognizes a few scraps from dresses her grandmother wore. The tops of the seams around each fabric were hand embroidered with a feather stitch in gold-colored embroidery floss.

Muriel grew up playing under a quilt frame in their Pennsylvania Dutch community. Naturally this quilt top has enormous sentimental value. If you are able to help locate this quilt top, please contact Muriel at mfjpsy@charter.net.

Absolut Pennsylvania and Joy to the World

Absolut Pennsylvania by Margaret Cusack

Absolut Pennsylvania by Margaret Cusack

Margaret Cusack is searching for two pieces of stitched artwork which are missing. Both pieces of art were in the same box. They were last seen on May 2, 2008 at the shipping company office in Maspeth, New York. The shipping company had last listed it as “on vehicle for delivery” but it was not delivered and it is no longer in their system.

The first, “Absolut Pennsylvania,” was commissioned by Absolut Vodka to use as an advertising poster. In the center is the Absolut Vodka bottle in yellow with hand-embroidered, blue lettering. Above the bottle are the words, Absolut Pennsylvania. The stitched image is very quilt-like. The colors are yellow, red, and blue. The bold yellow diamond shapes include symbols of Pennsylvania including a pretzel, the Liberty Bell, a guitar, an I-beam (for the steel industry), a folk art weather vane, etc. This stitched artwork is 28″ by 34″, and it is labeled on the back of the framed artwork with Margaret’s information and the artwork’s title. It is framed in a white wooden frame and the front of the artwork is protected with plexiglas.

African Circles

Quilt Fabrics

Quilt Fabrics

Penelope Feeney is hoping to recover a quilt she made called “African Circles.” It was last seen in 2004 in Timsbury near Bath in Somerset, England, or possibly London. It was lost during one of several house moves over the past few years. She thought it was in storage, but now that she’s gone through everything she’s realized it’s missing. It was probably in a clear plastic storage bag along with an antique Durham quilt.

“African Circles” is a large 9 ft by 9 ft quilt. It has a dark brown background with interlocking rings of green and yellow. Each ring frames a square of African themed fabric. The intersections are done in plain black and leopard print. The fabrics used are shown to the left. The quilt is machine pieced, machine appliqued, and machine quilted.

If you have found this quilt, please contact Penelope through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

This quilt top is queen size. It was made with a stamped cross stitch design. There are around twenty blocks. Sandy used mainly mauve/rose and green embroidery threads.

Valerie Bright is hoping to recover a quilt she was making for her granddaughter, Ladaria. The twin size quilt was made from a commerical pattern. Valerie last saw the quilt in 2003 when she shipped it from Sitka, Alaska to a quilter in Umpqua, Oregon. The shipping company says they delivered it, but the shop owner says she never received it.

The twin size quilt was made using the Blueberry Hill Bears pattern designed by Teresa Kogut. The blocks had solid blue frames around the 6″ bear blocks. There was also a border of yellow bees designed by Debbie Mumm.

Miniature Double Wedding Ring by Isabella Nelson

During November 2002 a Miniature Double Wedding Ring quilt was stolen from a locked display case at the Canmore Hospital in Alberta, Canada. There was no noticable damage to the display case. A police report was filed.

The quilt was made by Isabella Nelson in 2002. She used a commercial pattern from the book, “Small Scale Quiltmaking: Precision, Proportion, and Detail” by Sally Collins (C&T Publishing, photo posted with permission). The quilt measures 8″ by 9-1/2″. It has an unbleached muslin background. The rings are made from a red printed and blue printed cotton. This quilt was hand appliqued and hand quilted. A label was hand appliqued to the lower left corner on the back. The label says, “Double Wedding Ring, 8″x9.5″, Isabella Nelson, Canmore AB, 2002.”

The quilt was mounted on navy blue mat board and framed in an UMBRA brand shadow-box frame. The frame is dark brown and measures 10″ by 12″. The frame can hang or stand alone.

Middle Eastern Quilt

Apr 18 2002

Estelle Guizar has acquired a quilt which she believes may be a family heirloom. It was found in Gilroy, California. The quilt seems to have Middle Eastern influence.
It is about 72" by 96". The colors range from darks to pastels. The focal point looks like Chinese checkers framed by eternity symbols and script. The center of the quilt has a six-petal, yellow flower with an embroidered green center. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted. Estelle estimates it was made about 15-25 years ago. The quilt also has a label with Middle Eastern script.

Sampler Quilt by Lorene Grubert

Sampler Quilt by Lorene Grubert

In 1998-99 Lorene Gruber made a queen-sized Sampler Quilt using Diana Leone’s book, “The New Sampler Quilt” (Published by C&T Publishing Inc., image used with permission.)

Lorene last saw her quilt on February 24, 2002 at the Polish American Hall in Port St. Lucie, Florida where a quilt show had been held. After the show was finished all of the quilts, including Lorene’s, had been taken down, folded, and placed on tables. Lorene’s quilt ended up missing.

The main colors of this quilt are black, pink and gray. Each block of the quilt was framed in black before the sashing was applied. It was hand and machine pieced, and hand quilted. The hand appliqued label has Lorene’s name, the date and information about making the blocks.

If you know where this quilt is, please contact Lorene at beckep@earthlink.net.

Cross Stitch Quilt Wall Hanging

Nov 16 2001

After combining several different cross stitch quilt patterns Susan Milburn had completed a unique wall hanging of a sampler quilt. She embellished it by adding five Amish dolls in cross stitch at the bottom. Each doll represented one of the five daughters in her family. The Amish girls were from a Cricket Patch publication. The cross stitch was signed “S. Milburn” at the bottom.

The cross stitch sampler was to be a gift to Susan’s mother for Mother’s Day. One April in the early 1990′s, she brought it to a Lee Wards store (now closed) to choose an appropriate frame. While she was at the Memorial City shopping center in Houston, Texas, the cross stitch fell out of the package she was carrying it in. Susan advertised in the Houston paper and she also phoned many of the Milburns in the Houston area in an effort to recover this cross stitch.

Countless hours of love and care went into this work of art. If you have found this cross stitch wall hanging, please contact Susan at SMilburn@swe.com or bmatwestlake@yahoo.com.
