State Flowers of Arizona and New York

Jul 04 2011

State Flowers of Arizona and New York by Lori BiehleLori Biehle is hoping someone knows where this special quilt is. She made it for her grandmother, Greeta Pelton, on her 90th birthday in 2004. At the time, she and her two children flew to Arizona for her party. She chose to depict the state flowers of New York and Arizona since that is where her grandmother spent her adult life. When she moved into Faithful Heart Assisted Living in Tucson, Arizona, Lori assumed the quilt went with her.

The quilt is about 40″ by 60″. The main colors are cream, black, yellow, and red. It includes a fabric with red roses on a yellow/cream background and another fabric with yellow saguaro cactus flowers with some black. The pattern is a “camp” pattern. It is machine quilted on a home sewing machine. It has a label on the back that says it is a 90th birthday gift for Greeta Pelton from Lori, Jim, Julia, and sam.

When her grandmother passed away in December 2010 at age 97, some of her things may have ended up in Herndon, Virginia with family. Lori was told that most of her things were donated to charity. However, Lori is hoping she can recover this quilt. If it was donated to Goodwill or Salvation Army, she is happy to repay the purchaser plus shipping, and make a matching donation to the organization.

If you find this quilt, please contact Lori at ljbiehle@sbcglobal.net.

Yellow and Orange Lone Star Quilt Top

Mar 29 2011

Heidi Munroe last saw her Lone Star quilt top in January 2011. It was taken from her car in Ayer, Massachusetts. It was made in 1938 as a wedding present for her parents, but it had never been finished. Heidi saved it all these years, and she was taking it to show someone, when it was apparently stolen from the car.

The main colors of this quilt is yellow, orange, cream, and white. The design features one big Lone Star. There is no design on the fabric. The outer border may have been made from a sheet.

If you have seen a quilt top that fits this description, please contact Heidi at daisysmum81@aol.com.

Earth-Tone Pillow

May 05 2010

Virginia Baeten hopes to recover her missing patchwork pillow. It was last seen in the 1970s in a grocery store parking lot on Wisconsin Avenue, Appleton, Wisconsin. She and her husband were transporting parts for her husband’s job, and they were in a very uncomfortable truck. Virginia was using the pillow as back support. She thinks it must have fallen out of the truck when they stopped, or it is possible it was stolen. It was missing five or ten minutes before they noticed it was gone. They reported it to the store and left their name and phone number, but never got a called.

The pillow is about 9 to 12-inches square. The main colors are rust, cream, and brown. She remembers there were half square triangles forming the design. It was hand pieced and hand quilted with beige thread, and sewn together on the edges by machine. The backing was probably brown or rust.

Virginia writes, "This was my first quilt project that I made while taking a quilting class in Kimberly WI. I now teach quilting and would love to have my first project back." If you have this pillow, please contact Virginia at vbaeten@charter.net.

The pillow was hand pieced and hand quilted with beige thread and sewn together on the edges by machine. Backing was probably brown or rust.

Compass Star by Nancy Goldsworthy

Nancy Goldsworthy was searching for her Compass Star quilt. Nancy writes, “This is a very special quilt to me and my mother. It is the only one of my quilts that she ever asked for. It was loaned out to hang at MQS and was lost on it’s way home.” It was last seen on May 16, 2009 at the Machine Quilters Showcase in Overland Park, Kansas.

Happily, at the end of June 2009, this quilt was discovered in an unmarked box in storage, and it has now been returned to a very relieved owner!

This quilt is 96″ square. The main colors are green, yellow, and purple. Nancy also used pink and cream fairy frost fabric for the background. The purple fabric has sparkles. The quilt, made in 2007, is machine pieced and machine quilted. It has a label which is hand appliqued to the lower corner that says, “Made by Nancy Goldsworthy, Portland, Oregon, for my mother Irene Stephens. Happy Mother’s Day.”

Mona Lisa by Susan Raymond

Susan Raymond is hoping to recover two quilts that were lost during a move. They were last seen when the quilts were packed in June 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona. Two other families also had belongings on the truck, and were moving to Washington state. To date, the moving company still hasn’t been able to locate the missing quilts.

This king size quilt was made between 1987 and 1994. It is hand painted. The central portion is based on the famous Mona Lisa painting. The blocks are hand painted and the border blocks are pieced. There are six Tree of Life blocks and 12 Islamic Puzzle blocks in the corners. This quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted. The main colors are greens and browns.

The second quilt (not pictured) is based on Edvard Munch’s “Scream” painting. It is a small wall hanging which is also hand painted, hand pieced, and hand quilted. The borders are pieced.
