200 Child-Sized Donation Quilts

Jan 09 2001

Lisa Brunstetter has reported that 200 child-size quilts were stolen from her car during December 1997. Around 1 PM on a Monday, she had stopped at the Marley Station Mall to pick up a Christmas gift. In the back seat of her car were trash bags full of quilts that were to be donated to hospitalized children. When she returned, the window had been broken and the quilts and several other things had been stolen.

The theft was reported in the local paper, but never found. There were about 200 small quilts ranging from 36-inches to 50-inches in dimension.

Lisa believes the thief may have just “dumped” the quilts when they found out what they had stolen, but she holds out hope that they can still be recovered. If you have any information about these quilts, please contact Lisa at LBRUNSTE@arinc.com.

Half Log Cabin Quilt

Nov 15 2000

Half Log Cabin by Wendy Bain

Half Log Cabin by Wendy Bain

This beautiful lap quilt was made by Wendy Bain of Kingwood, Texas as a gift. On December 17, 1999 she shipped it from the George Bush Intercontinental Airport and it hasnt been seen since. It was supposed to arrive in Laguna Niguel, California before Christmas.

The quilt is a Half Log Cabin quilt. The photo shown above was taken before the quilt was finished, so there may be another row or two of blocks. Each block measures 7-1/2-inches. Wendy does not have a photo of the finished quilt, but she thinks it ended up being nine blocks down and seven blocks across.

Distinctive fabrics used include a very bright cobalt blue, Moda marble and a fabric with coffee beans on a cream background which are printed almost actual size. Many of the light fabrics were used with the wrong side showing. The backing was a subtle rust fabric. The quilt was bound either with the same rust fabric or with a solid rust fabric. It was machine quilted with rust colored thread in a large meander pattern, about 1/2″ to 3/4″ apart.

A label was attached to the lower right of the backing with whipstitching. It was a muslin label which included a stamped and hand-colored sunflower, the names of the recipients, Dawn and John Brock, and the name of the maker, Wendy Bain. She may have also included where she made it (Kingwood, Texas) and the year, 1999. She may have not used permanent fabric markers to color the sunflower, so those colors may have faded.

The quilt was shipped in a plastic bag with a mailing label and that was placed in a cube-shaped box approximately 9″ by 10″ by 9″. The address was printed directly onto the box and covered with 2-inch wide, clear tape. She had mailed it, but she forgot to insure it. Once it came up missing, she filled out tracing papers twice and included photos the second time, but she never received a response from the shipping company.

If you can help Wendy recover this quilt, please contact her at mzdetail@gmail.com.

Hopscotch Wall Hanging

Oct 13 2000

Hopscotch Wall Hanging by Becky Klose

Hopscotch Wall Hanging by Becky Klose

Becky Klose made this wall quilt as a Christmas gift for her friend. It was shipped via a shipping company to Brighton, Missouri in January 2000. The shipping company says they left the package on her friend’s porch, but her friend could not find it anywhere on her property.

This is a small wall quilt measuring about 15″ by 15″. The pattern is called Hopscotch and it was tea dyed. It also has a stamp on the back and is inscribed, “To: Tracie from Becky.”

The shipping company did reimburse Becky for the amount she insured it for. Becky says the loss “makes me so very sad after the love I put in it.” If you have information about this quilt, please contact Becky at klose2u@ameritech.net.

Daniel’s Baby Quilt

Mar 22 2000

Daniel's Baby Quilt by Bonnie Comar

Daniel's Baby Quilt by Bonnie Comar

Bonnie Comar made this quilt for her grandsons first birthday. It is her own original variation of the Bear Paw block.

The quilt is made of two 12-inch blocks with gold and white paws and two 12-inch blocks with gold and red paws. The center square has a teddy bear on a rocking horse which was painted, embroidered and appliqud. The background is navy blue. The borders are red and blue stripes with nine patch blocks at the intersections. The quilt is bound with gold binding. The quilt was labeled “Daniel Timothy Comar” and “Love Grandma.” These were embroidered on the back along with “Colorado” and his birthday, “March 12, 1993.”

Daniels baby quilt had been placed in a storage unit called U Store It in Linden, New Jersey. When the rent was not paid on the storage unit, the contents were sold at auction. There was also a Christmas tree wall quilt about 20″ by 20″ with buttons, but Bonnie really wants to find Daniels quilt.

If you have seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Bonnie through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page

Flowers In The Cabin

Aug 31 1999

Flowers in the Cabin by Shirley Sims

Flowers in the Cabin by Shirley Sims

This quilt, Flowers in the Cabin, was lost by a shipping company in June 1999 during the return shipment after being displayed in the MQS (Machine Quilters Showcase) show in Springfield, Illinois on June 9-12, 1999.

The top was pieced by Kristi Sims-Kirkegard and it was machine quilted by Shirley Sims. It is 71″ by 82″. Kristi made this quilt for her dad for Christmas. The quilt pattern was inspired by the book “More Quick Rotary Cut Quilts” by Pan Bono. Notice the distinctive backing and label.

This quilt is the victim of a suspected theft. Though the shipping company has compensated Shirley monetarily, needless to say, she is very upset and would much rather have the quilt safely returned. She has offered a reward for the return of the quilt, no questions asked. If you have any information on this quilt, please contact Shirley Sims at ssims@enid.com.
