Springtime Bouquet by Susan Schwarz

Susan Schwarz created this quilt, Springtime Bouquet, in response to the quilt challenge sponsored by The Childrens Inn, Bethesda, Maryland, a non-profit organization providing a family-centered residence for seriously ill children and their families.

Springtime Bouquet, along with a second quilt called “Heron in the Harbor,” turned up missing on December 3, 1999 before all of the challenge quilts could be displayed.

Susan Schwarzs quilt is 22.5″ by 26.5″ and has a predominantly deep purple border. Susan used the swirly challenge fabric in the four corners and in the vase. The snippets quilt is made with a mosaic of small pieces of fabric fused to the background fabric. The quilt her name on the back of the quilt.

These quilts were donated, so this quilt actually belongs to the Childrens Inn.

Quilt Tops

Margot McDonnell reports that she has lost two quilt tops. She had sent them to Lancaster for hand quilting about three years ago.

One had all the presidents through Clinton embroidered in navy with some other squares with presidential symbols going through diagonally. The sashing was red and white stripes with stars.

The second quilt top was a clamshell charm done in shades ranging from off-white to dark rust.

She had wanted these special quilts to be given the Amish treatment so she could present each one to a family member. Apparently they were stolen in the mail. They were sent via US mail.

Half Log Cabin Baby Quilt

Sherry Jystad reported the loss of her fourth daughter’s baby quilt. The quilt is pink, blue and yellow and is made with the half log cabin block. The quilt also has lace around the outer edges.

The quilt was lost around March 1998 when they were going to the beach with relatives. Sherry believes the quilt may have fallen out of her van or blown off the wagon at Huntington State Beach in Orange County, California.

Quilters in the Washington, DC area were invited to participate in a challenge quilt event for The Childrens Inn at NIH (National Institutes of Health) in Bethesda, Maryland. Susan Hinzman decided to enter a quilt which would be donated to Childrens Inn and be permanently placed in the residence rooms where families can remain with their seriously ill children during medical treatment.

The quilts were due on November 1, 1999. First, all of the entries were transported to a photographer and then they were sent back to Childrens Inn. A two month exhibit of these quilts was planned at the NIH Clinical Center, opening on December 5, 1999. The quilt volunteer coordinator and the Childrens Inn operations manager called Susan Hinzman on December 3 to inform her that her quilt, Heron in the Harbor, was missing. Another quilt by a different quilter also disappeared.

Susan Hinzmans quilt is 33″ square and has a hand inked label with her name, address, the name of the quilt, and the reason the quilt was made for the NIH. This label was hand stitched on, so it is possible that it could have been removed. However, Susan almost always adds a fox somewhere on her quilt. You can see a small brown fox in the lower left corner of this quilt.

These quilts were donated, so this quilt actually belongs to the Childrens Inn.

Sunbonnet Girl Baby Quilt

When her own well-loved baby quilt wore out, Gale Link made a reproduction quilt for her own daughter. This reproduction quilt was stolen from her home in Sewanee, Tennessee several years ago. She suspects it may have been sold at a flea market in the area.

This Sunbonnet Girl baby quilt was hand embroidered and much more delicate than the usual appliqud ones. The girls are rolling out dough, rolling a hoop, smelling flowers, and other similar activities. The sashing is light pink. It is a copy of the one her aunt made for her when she was a baby. The quilt is signed by Gale.

Also stolen at the same time was a large, ornately framed photograph of her late husband when he was about four years old. The photograph shows him sleeping in a corner with a flat cap on his head and is entitled “Played Out”.

Pink and Black Drunkard’s Path

In February 1998, a Drunkards Path quilt was stolen from Evelyn Harvisons home in North Pole, Alaska. This was a full size quilt made from a plain, bright, rosy pink fabric combined with a black print.

Evelyn says, “Since this is the last quilt my mother made before she died, Id really like to get it back.”

The quilt did not have a label. Evelyn believes it was hand pieced and possibly machine quilted, but she explains she knew nothing about quilting about then.

Beloved Baby Blankie

Nov 12 1999

Shauna is looking for her five year old daughter’s baby blanket. It was misplaced during a trip to Seattle as they were getting off the ferry. Her daughter was two at the time.

The baby blanket had six printed teddy bear and bunny blocks framed with fuchsia strips. The backing was pink plaid. It was quilted on the bunny and bear blocks and also tied.

Shauna says of her daughter, “She still talks about it and would love to have it back.”

Log Cabin Quilt Left in Rental Car

Jean reports that her daughter accidentally left a twin size, log cabin quilt in the trunk of a rental car in Columbus, Ohio. Her name, Denise Renee and the year 1976 were embroidered on the quilt. It was made from scraps of material from clothing Jean had made for her. The quilt was backed with a sheet with pink flowers on it.

Naturally, her daughter is devastated. “If I could find it for her, she would be very happy,” Jean concludes.

Pale Green Appliqued Quilt

Marlene reports that she recently had a quilt stolen from her own home. It was a queen size quilt which reached all the way to the floor. It was mostly pale green, hand appliqued, hand embroidered, and hand quilted. Many areas also had beading. This was her first quilt which she made in 1988. It has her full name and the year embroidered on the right inside edge.

Millennium Quilt by Deb Freeseman

The Original Millennium Quilt, designed and made by Deb Freesemann, owner of design studio Sew Dear. This quilt was introduced at the International Quilt Market in Providence in Spring 1999. In March 1999 this quilt was shipped from Waverly, Louisiana to Center Harbor, New Hampshire to be photographed for the Keepsake Quilting catalog, but it was lost by a shipping company during shipment. The quilt was last scanned in Chicago, Illinois.

The quilt uses 2000 different fabrics. Deb made it using from four generations of her familys fabrics. It is approximately 50″ by 50″. The squares are finished 1″. The border is made of four different black on black prints. It is machine quilted with gold metallic thread on the center gold diamond and on the gold inner border.

The label has a photo transfer of the cover of the pattern she designed and markets. It has her company name, Sew Dear, on it. There are also four different “fabric cut-out women” joined together with hearts. Each of these are cut from four generations of fabrics with a name under each cut-out: Hermina Homister, Hilda Gabe, Martha Drape, and Deb Freesemann.

Deb says, “This quilt is very dear to me since it’s an original design for which I’m marketing a pattern, but more importantly it is a reflection of the inner connections between my family’s generations. I would love to have it returned….no questions asked.”
