Missing French Quilts

Feb 13 2001

Lili Aux Chats by Anne Gailhbaud

Lili Aux Chats by Anne Gailhbaud

These two original quilts have been lost during shipment. The quilts were handsewn by Anne Gailhbaud of Perigord, France, for her daughter, Aurlie. When Aurlie moved from Mantes-la-Jolie, France to Darmstadt, Germany she used a shipping company to send four large packages to her new home. Only three of the packages arrived. The missing package contained a variety of personal belongings including these two quilts. The company reports the package was lost in Germany. Anne believes it may have been lost around Strasbourg.

Photos of these two missing quilts are featured in the March 2001 issue of “Les Nouvelles du Patchwork”, a French quilting magazine. Their website is http://francepatchwork.com.

Lili Aux Chats (above) is a large quilt, sized to fit a double bed. It is sewn by hand with only a little machine quilting in the border. The design in the border spells out “LILI” on the right and “CHAT” on the left. The central portion contains sixteen different applique cats and there is a little white mouse in the center. Each cat block has a circle the size of a plate quilted around the cat. The quilt is marine blue with red and white cats.

This quilt was labeled, but it was attached in a way that it could possibly be removed. The label has a cat with Anne Gailhbaud’s name, the quilt’s name “Lili Aux Chats” and the date, 1995 (?).

Perigord by Anne Gailhbaud

Perigord by Anne Gailhbaud

Le Perigord Encore is a wall hanging about the size of a baby quilt. It depicts a native landscape in applique. It has a clear blue sky, buttons for cars, a woman hanging out quilts to dry, and a plane in the sky with a banner that says “Perigord Encore.” On the hills are a house and a Perigord castle. Anne does not remember if this quilt had a label, but it probably does since it had been exhibited in a quilt show. The quilt was made in 1994 or 1995.

If you can help Anne recover these two quilts, please contact her at mgailhbaud001@cegetel.rss.fr

Double Wedding Ring Quilt

Sep 08 2000

Karlene Bradley hopes to find a quilt made by her great-grandmother in the 1920s or 1930s. It is a double wedding ring pattern, made for a double bed. The background is white and uses a variety of prints for the rings. The handwork was beautiful.

This quilt was last seen in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in the early 1990s. It was supposed to be handed down to Karlene after her great-aunt died, but it was sold in error. Karlene thinks the woman who bought it, a Mrs. Bottenberg, has since died. Karlene would like to locate her family and possibly retrieve this heirloom quilt.

If you know anything that can help, please contact Karlene Bradley at karlyb@servtech.com. Originally posted September 8, 2000.

Antique Quilts Disappear

Feb 15 2000

Anne Copeland has reported the loss of several antique quilts. All of the quilts listed below were stolen from Annes home in Lomita, California. Unfortunately, Anne does not have photographs of these quilts and quilt tops.

  1. Unique Double Wedding Ring Quilt, machine quilted with long-arm quilt machine in a stippling pattern. Double bed size (approx. very light lavender (the almost turn-of-the-century lavender, not the 1930s lavender) with brown, black and dark color stripe and check rings. The quilt was probably made during the first quarter of the 20th century. This quilt is odd looking, as if it were made by convicts, and has self binding, and a loose muslin backing.
  2. Crazy quilt top, large with dark color velvets and some corduroys and wool. There is a large circle in the center divided into four pieces, each in a different dark color. Moderate amount of embroidery with simple styles such as feather stitching, herringbone. Probably made in the 1970s. Very attractive piece and edges were raw (not finished) when it was stolen. NOT foundation-pieced.
  3. Friendship sampler type cotton quilt top and back, approximately double or full bed size. Greens, browns, and other earthy prints in woodsy motifs. Blocks are set on point with a brown on brown cotton check in between and in outer setting triangle blocks. Inner border (green) with outer double cream or beige print outer border. Backing is same brown on brown cotton check with butterfly block and another block on the back.
  4. 1930s Orange cotton quilt top (very bright pumpkin or bittersweet orange) in full bed size with arrow-like shapes approx. 2-1/2″ wide between blocks in multiple pieced prints of browns, blues, and other darker prints. Unsure of pattern name (not any variation of Flying Geese).
  5. 1870s log cabin remnant in light colors (was found inside another quilt), with name of a person in the corner and 8 (possibly made by 8-year-old child). Double pinks, and many fine fabrics that are in very poor condition, Was probably a small bed size. All cotton with possible satin or ribbon strips in some places.
  6. Mink teddy bear won in nationwide word competition around 1986 or 87. Dark brown mink about 8″. Made from recycled fur.

Several other items (Raggedy Ann and Andys) were also stolen at the same time, but Anne realizes they would be very difficult to trace.

These quilts were part of a lecture series about quilts. Any information leading to their recovery will be greatly appreciated. Please contact Anne Copeland through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Red, Yellow and White Turkey Track

Jan 19 2000

Turkey Tracks

Turkey Tracks

This treasured family heirloom was stolen from Marcy Kenyons New York City apartment about five years ago (1995). They believe the thief probably used it to wrap the other items they were stealing, not knowing how priceless the quilt really was.

This quilt was made in 1961 by Bessie Beulah Kenyon in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was made for her son and wife who were the owners father and mother. It is a double bed size. She used a red and yellow print fabric with a white background to make her Turkey Track pattern, shown to the right. It has a tremendous amount of quilting, white on white. At the time of the theft it was in excellent conditions. There was no label or signature.

If anyone has seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact mjkenyon@aol.com.
