Autumn’s Glory

Autumn's Glory by Nancy Prince

Autumn's Glory by Nancy Prince

Nancy Prince needs our help recovering her quilt, Autumn’s Glory. She had it in her classroom when she was teaching at the 2005 AQS show in Paducah, Kentucky. It was on the table with the other quilts made for her book. At the end of the workshop she realized it was missing.
This original quilt is 17″ by 15″. It depicts a rural farm scene with a fall tree on the left, a barn in the distance, and a wooden fence and boulders in the foreground. It has hand-painted fabric. Nancy used thread painting to create the trees, pumpkin, fence posts, and distant shrubs. It is hand appliqued and machine quilted. This quilt was made as one of the projects in Nancy’s first book, “Easy Thread Painting.” There is a label in the botom left corner.
Please contact Nancy at Nancy@nancyprince.com.

Swarming Out by Birgit Schuller

Swarming Out by Birgit Schuller

On July 8, 2005 Birgit Schüller carefully packaged two quilts designed especially for the 2005 Hoffman Challenge and shipped them from Germany to California. Usually the trip takes three to five days, but the package did not arrived as expected and the shipping company could not locate it. Birgit waited for almost six weeks before the quilts finally made it to their destination!

“Swarming Out,” shown above, is a paper-pieced quilt depicting spiraling flying geese is 36.5″ by 36.5″. Birgit used bright batik fabrics for the geese, arranged in rainbow sequence. The background is black batik. There is also a 1″ by 1″ square of the Hoffman Challenge fabric in the center of the quilt. Swarming Out has a computer-printed label that gives the details of the quilt along with Birgit’s address and phone number. The label is hand-appliqued in the bottom left-hand corner of the back.

Winding Way by Birgit Schuller

Winding Way by Birgit Schuller

“Winding Way” is an original quilt that is 42″ long by 19.5″ wide. It is made almost exclusively with brightly colored, 60 degree triangles in different sizes. On the bigger ones, Brigit experimented with fuzzy-cut curves which form the winding way. There are also stack-n-whack hexagons scattered around the center section featuring the 2005 Hoffman Challenge fabric. This quilt is machine pieced and machine quilted. The detail shows the free motion quilt lines typical of this quilt. Birgit added a computer-printed label that gives the details of the quilt and her address and phone number. This label is also hand-appliqued in the bottom left-hand corner of the back.

What Goes Around…

Aug 17 2005

What Goes Around by Norah McMeeking

What Goes Around by Norah McMeeking

Norah McMeeking is hoping someone has seen her quilt, “What Goes Around.” Sometime around 2001 or 2002 she left the quilt with a shop owner to consider for a class. There was a family crisis and Norah forgot about the quilt and who she had left it with. She knows it was at a quilt store somewhere between Santa Barbara and Walnut Creek, California. She called all the shops but no one has seen it. One store in Atascadero changed hands after the owner died. Norah thinks whoever has it doesn’t know it was “on loan.”

The wall hanging is about 30″ by 30″. It was made from a commercial pattern by Reynola Pakusich found in American Quilter. The main colors are golds, purples, blues, red and orange. It uses batiks, African fabrics and abstract textures. It was machine pieced, machine appliqued and machine quilted in 1998. This quilt has a label with Norah’s name on the back.

If you can help with the recovery of this quilt, please contact Norah at norah@cox.net.

Eleanor Bauer Quilts

Aug 09 2005

Rebecca Long is searching for several missing quilts made by her mother, Eleanor Bauer, who has passed away.

Two are small, carriage-size, applique quilts. Eleanor used a red calico background for one and solids with calicos on the other. They were hand appliqued and machine pieced. She made them between 1975 and 1979 for her twins. She used a pattern found in a free baby magazine.

One was made by Bertha Huey. This one should have her son’s name, Harold Huey, somewhere on the quilt. It was stolen from him after her death. It was made in 1949 in Indiana or Illinois and was last seen in the Argo/Summit, Illinois area. Before Eleanor passed away, she wrote, “I was told that Bertha was a quilter perhaps out of necessity as they were a poor family who moved from Indiana to Illinois and had a large family late in life…I never saw any of the quilt(s) but was told about them and consider …them a legacy…as a tie to my maternal grandmother who died before I was born.”

The quilts were last seen in Bolingbrook or Cicero, Illinois. It is possible they were sent to a thirft store when she moved.

Please contact Rebecca at clong12@tampabay.rr.com if you’ve seen any quilts that might fit this description.
