Block of the Month Garden Club

A quilt top sample of the Garden Club Block of the Month has been stolen from the Little Quilts Quilt Shop in Marietta, Georgia. It was on display to promote the Block of the Month pattern series by Country Threads when it was stolen in January 2001. (Block of the Month photo is used with permission from Country Threads. © 1999 Country Threads, Inc.)

The 84″ by 64″ quilt top, made by Kathy Niemann, has beige backgrounds with country colors like red, rust, gold, navy, colonial blue, and hunter green. All of the fabrics are from 1999 and 2000 fabric lines. The quilt top is machine pieced and hand appliqued.

Sampler Baby Quilt

Mar 01 2001

Sampler Baby Quilt by Lana Metzger

Sampler Baby Quilt by Lana Metzger

Lana Metzger stitched a lot of love into the sampler baby quilt that she made for her granddaughter, but now she is looking for this quilt which was lost at the Orlando Airport on February 23, 2001. She believes it was possibly left or dropped in the gift store located by Gate 54. This was her grandbaby’s favorite quilt, and it took two weeks for her to go to sleep peacefully without it. Lana has tried to call the airport to no avail.

The quilt is a small baby quilt with four 12-inch blocks. The blocks were applique hearts, shoofly block, drunkard’s path and another that she doesn’t remember the name of. The quilt is tan, red and blue and the backing had the same red paisley print that was used in the blocks.

Lana will gladly pay shipping costs to anyone who can return this quilt. Please contact her at bonedign@jvlnet.com.

Missing French Quilts

Feb 13 2001

Lili Aux Chats by Anne Gailhbaud

Lili Aux Chats by Anne Gailhbaud

These two original quilts have been lost during shipment. The quilts were handsewn by Anne Gailhbaud of Perigord, France, for her daughter, Aurlie. When Aurlie moved from Mantes-la-Jolie, France to Darmstadt, Germany she used a shipping company to send four large packages to her new home. Only three of the packages arrived. The missing package contained a variety of personal belongings including these two quilts. The company reports the package was lost in Germany. Anne believes it may have been lost around Strasbourg.

Photos of these two missing quilts are featured in the March 2001 issue of “Les Nouvelles du Patchwork”, a French quilting magazine. Their website is http://francepatchwork.com.

Lili Aux Chats (above) is a large quilt, sized to fit a double bed. It is sewn by hand with only a little machine quilting in the border. The design in the border spells out “LILI” on the right and “CHAT” on the left. The central portion contains sixteen different applique cats and there is a little white mouse in the center. Each cat block has a circle the size of a plate quilted around the cat. The quilt is marine blue with red and white cats.

This quilt was labeled, but it was attached in a way that it could possibly be removed. The label has a cat with Anne Gailhbaud’s name, the quilt’s name “Lili Aux Chats” and the date, 1995 (?).

Perigord by Anne Gailhbaud

Perigord by Anne Gailhbaud

Le Perigord Encore is a wall hanging about the size of a baby quilt. It depicts a native landscape in applique. It has a clear blue sky, buttons for cars, a woman hanging out quilts to dry, and a plane in the sky with a banner that says “Perigord Encore.” On the hills are a house and a Perigord castle. Anne does not remember if this quilt had a label, but it probably does since it had been exhibited in a quilt show. The quilt was made in 1994 or 1995.

If you can help Anne recover these two quilts, please contact her at mgailhbaud001@cegetel.rss.fr

Alphabet Quilt

Feb 02 2001

This quilt has a white background and each square is a letter of the alphabet. Next to each letter is an applique of an item that begins with that letter. For instance, “A&quot had an apple and “Z” had a zebra. In addition, each square had a small label where the quilter embroidered or sewed her name and possibly the date. If there are dates, they would be from 1949. This quilt was made by her grandmother’s quilting club for the owner before she was born.

It is not clear if the quilt was lost or stolen. Her parents simply said it disappeared during a move. If you know of a quilt that fits this description, please contact the owner at upaulette@email.msn.com

Old Woman in the Shoe Quilt

Jan 31 2001

Gail Surrena is asking for help is finding her baby quilt which has been missing for a long time. Her mother pieced the baby quilt and her great-grandmother quilted in in 1954. This treasured quilt was used to bring both of her sons home from the hospital.

On September 12, 1980, when her youngest son was eight days old, her family and some friends went to the White County Fair in Searcy, Arkansas. The quilt was inadvertently set down along with a stuffed toy, and both disappeared.

The quilt is an applique of the Old Woman in The Shoe. It is trimmed in baby blue, which is worn from so many years of tender love. The edges are scalloped. The shoe is brown. The quilt also has a blood stain on it.

Gail adds, “I would love to have the quilt returned. No questions asked.”

If you can help Gail, please contact her at glsurrena@gci.net.

Tree of Life

Oct 29 2000

Tree of Life by Joan Mayer

Tree of Life by Joan Mayer

Joan Mayer brought her hand appliqued and hand quilted masterpiece to a drycleaner in Northport, Florida during March 2000. It disappeared before she could pick it up.

The quilt is king-sized, approximately 120″ by 120″. It is made with a medallion format consisting of an appliqued Tree of Life in the center of the quilt. Four additional appliqued motifs surround the center portion. The flowers are pink and red with yellow and green. The backing and binding are both white. It is quilted in an all-over grid pattern. The appliqud portion is framed with a scalloped quilting pattern and then a single cable pattern. The quilt was made from a commercial pattern.

This quilt was made in 1985 by Joans mother, Dorothy Winton, who is now deceased. It may have been signed, but Joan is not sure. If it is labeled, it may say some or all of the following, “Dorothy Winton, 6890 Alani Ct. (or 89 Honu Ct.), Northport, FL, Cottage Quilters.”

If you know anything about this quilt, please contact her son-in-law, Mike Webb at michaelewebb@yahoo.com. You may also call Joan Mayer directly at 502-961-7130.

Family Tree Quilt

Jul 25 2000

Anita Wetherill has been working on a Family Tree quilt for the last six years. While she was traveling she carried the unfinished quilt in a forest green and navy canvas bag with a black shoulder strap. The bag looks similar to a soft briefcase that would be used for carrying a laptop computer. On June 23, 2000 around 3:30 to 4:30 PM, the bag was stolen while she was waiting for a flight in the Philadelphia Airport Terminal.

This family tree was for the Smith family who has been holding family reunions every two years since the late 1940s. Anita was on the way to the reunion in Green Lake, Wisconsin when the bag containing the quilt top was stolen.

The unfinished quilt top featured an appliqued tree trunk and some appliqued leaves with signatures of family members. Individual six-inch squares made by each family member were also in the bag.

Anita says, “Unfortunately, I am sure that whoever took it thought that he/she was getting a laptop computer or something more valuable that some fabric and it ended up in a dumpster somewhere. However, stranger things have happened than the possibility of it reappearing!”

Anita is offering a reward for the return of her quilt top. If you have any information about this quilt, please contact Anita at alw617@gateway.net.

Appliqued Challenge Quilt

Apr 15 2000

Susanne McCoy participated in a quilt challenge sponsored by her Florida Guild. During the fall of 1996 she shipped it to Coral Springs, Florida using a shipping company. The shipping company said the quilt was successfully delivered but no one on the receiving end ever saw it.

The quilt is about 30″ by 35″. It is machine pieced and quilted in shades of purple and is made of calicos. The main focal point is a 20″ tall, appliqud woman in a bustier, skirt and go-go boots. She is done in a cartoon style.

On the quilt Susanne had written: Congratulations CSQ 1986 – 1996

There is also a small appliqu of what looks like a page from a newspaper complete with writing and photo transfers.

Have you seen a quilt which fits this description? If so, please contact Susanne at ellman@prodigy.net.

Reproduction Print Quilts

Jan 26 2000

Log Cabin by Suzanne Leimer

Log Cabin by Suzanne Leimer

Suzanne Leimer created two quilts using 1930s reproduction fabric and had them on display at her store, Suzannes Quilt Shop, in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. In the past six months these two quilts were stolen.

The first quilt that was stolen is a 57″ by 76″ log cabin pattern which she had made from 100% cotton 1930s fabric she had been collecting for ten years. The quilt was machine pieced and machine quilted in an all-over stipple pattern. The center of the log cabin is a solid yellow and the binding is solid pink. Cotton batting was used. The backing is a P&B print that is off-white with a pink design. The quilt did not have a label.

The log cabin quilt was stolen on Saturday, August 20, 1999. Five yards of pink 1930s reproduction fabric was stolen at the same time. The picture shown to the left (top picture) is not the quilt Suzanne made, but it is from the book “Housewarmers” by Possibilities which she used to make the quilt. (Log Cabin photo is used with permission from Possibilities.)

All Creatures by Suzanne Leimer

All Creatures by Suzanne Leimer

The second quilt was stolen from the same store on Saturday, January 15, 2000. All Creatures Great and Small was made using the second book in the Blessing Quilt Series by Four Corners. This quilt has hand embroidery, hand applique, machine piecing, and machine quilting. It is 41″ by 47″. Most of the fabrics are 1930s reproduction prints and all fabrics are 100% cotton. The narrow inner green border is a star print on a green background by Marcus. The outside border is a pink check by P&B Fabrics. The backing is white with small pastel flowers, also by P&B Fabrics. There was no label on this quilt.

This quilt had been on display, clothes-pinned to a lattice wall at the front of the store when it was stolen. The second picture is from the Four Corners book; it is not Suzannes quilt. (All Creatures Great and Small photo is used with permission from Four Corners.)

Both of these quilts were to be for a future granddaughter. If you have any information about either of these two quilts, please contact Suzanne at suzqu@bellsouth.net or 561-798-0934 or visit her quilt shops webpage.

Pale Green Appliqued Quilt

Nov 03 1999

Marlene reports that she recently had a quilt stolen from her own home. It was a queen size quilt which reached all the way to the floor. It was mostly pale green, hand appliqued, hand embroidered, and hand quilted. Many areas also had beading. This was her first quilt which she made in 1988. It has her full name and the year embroidered on the right inside edge.

If you have seen a quilt that looks like this, please contact Marlene at mckenzie@gil.com.au.
