Recovered! Fish Tank

May 10 2010

Fish Tank by Nancy Ryan

Fish Tank by Nancy Ryan

Nancy Ryan was hoping someone had seen her original quilt, “Fish Tank.” It was last seen on April 27, 2010 in Gainesville, Florida. It had been displayed at the Quilting Natural Florida II Exhibit and was being returned by a commercial shipping company. The company said it was delivered to her California address and left on the front porch. When Nancy returned home, the package was no where to be found.

Thankfully, one month later, Nancy reported that her quilt had been recovered! The shipper had delivered it to the wrong address, and it is now safely back home with Nancy!

This quilt was made in 2009 and is 36″ wide by 24″ long. Nancy used bright batiks, especially turquoise and orange. The quilt is appliquéd and machine quilted with specialty threads. Fancy machine stitches were used when the sheer fabric was applied.

Zoo Babies

Pamela Jones was searching for a Zoo Babies quilt which she made for her great-granddaughter, Madeline Jones. It was adapted from a commercial pattern in "Quilts, Bibs, Blankies…Oh My!" The quilt was last seen on October 6, 2009 in Ft. Polk, Louisiana. Pamela shipped the quilt in an un-marked box from Chapmansboro, Tennessee to Ft. Polk. Her local shipping company reports the box was delivered on October 10, however the recipient never received it. She filed a complaint with the shipping company.

This quilt is 48" by 72". It uses various green nine-patch blocks and has a pink doggy flannel on the back. Pamela also used various colors of cotton velvet for the animal appliques.

In March 2010 she received a call from the manager of the shipping company giving an excuse for the missing package, but they are still unable to find it.

Baltimore Blocks

Feb 10 2010

Baltimore BlocksLynn Davidson hopes to find a Baltimore Block that she made from a commercial pattern by Mary Simon. This block is 16″ square. The main colors are bright cobalt, bright red, orange, yellow, green, and brown. It is hand appliqued. There may have been cartouches inked onto the block, but there was no signature yet. This block, along with several other “Baltimore”-type blocks, was last seen in Covina, California during a move that was made in February or March of 2007. There was quite a bit of confusion on what boxes went where, and Lynn thinks some quilting items may have accidentally been sent to a charity.

Dutch Girl Quilt

Feb 09 2010

Angelina S. Carter’s Dutch Girl quilt was last seen at Wurtsmith Air Force Base during January 1991 when it was being packed into a moving box. Her mother made this full-size quilt for her in 1974 when she was seven years old. It is possible that the quilt may have been seen in Bayonne, New Jersey by anybody at the moving company where crates would have been loaded up onto a ship to go overseas. This was a military move and they know that the boxes were placed in crates and sealed in their front yard. The crates were not to be opened until they received them in their new home in England, however they know that some crates were opened because other things were missing and a desk was disassembled.

Each block has a white background . Angelina’s missing quilt looks very much a Sunbonnet Sue quilt but with black borders. Each dutch girl is made of different fabrics and hand appliqued. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted. If it has a label, it may have the name of her mother, Carole DiSanto. This is a full-size quilt that was made for Angelina when she was 6 or 7 years old.

If you’ve seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact Angelina at ScoutMomAng@aol.com or ScoutMomAng@gmail.com. Originally posted March 19, 2004. Updated February 9, 2010.

Yellow Tulips

Jan 13 2010

Ruth Young is hoping to recover a Yellow Tulips quilt made by Edith Linstrom Forsberg. The quilt was bequeathed to Laura Swanson, but her uncle, Reuben Lindstrom, took it when Edith died. Reuben’s wife, Bella Lindstrom, gave the quilt to a museum "back east." The quilt was last seen in November 1955 in Randolph, Kansas. Laura is now 95 years old and has always wondered what happened to this special quilt.

This quilt features yellow appliqued tulips on a white background with long, dark green stems. The fabrics were sateen. It is double bed size, and was hand appliqued and hand quilted sometime between 1915 and 1920.

Please contact Ruth at ruthyoung@bbcwb.net.

Recovered! Compass Star

Jul 01 2009

Compass Star by Nancy Goldsworthy

Compass Star by Nancy Goldsworthy

Nancy Goldsworthy was searching for her Compass Star quilt. Nancy writes, “This is a very special quilt to me and my mother. It is the only one of my quilts that she ever asked for. It was loaned out to hang at MQS and was lost on it’s way home.” It was last seen on May 16, 2009 at the Machine Quilters Showcase in Overland Park, Kansas.

Happily, at the end of June 2009, this quilt was discovered in an unmarked box in storage, and it has now been returned to a very relieved owner!

This quilt is 96″ square. The main colors are green, yellow, and purple. Nancy also used pink and cream fairy frost fabric for the background. The purple fabric has sparkles. The quilt, made in 2007, is machine pieced and machine quilted. It has a label which is hand appliqued to the lower corner that says, “Made by Nancy Goldsworthy, Portland, Oregon, for my mother Irene Stephens. Happy Mother’s Day.”
