Joyce Grove is hoping to recover her Silk Ribbon ‘N Lace quilt top. This is a cream colored king size quilt top with cream colored lace, candle wicking, and other embellishments. It was hand and machine appliqued, and machine pieced in 2003. This quilt was in Joyce’s sewing room in her home around April 8, 2004. It was either accidentally taken to Goodwill with other bags or it was brought out to the trash. The loss occurred in Bloomington, Indiana. Posters offering a $250 reward have been posted at the local Goodwills and their sister stores. The picture shown here is not the missing quilt top, but it is an identical quilt that Joyce made for her daughter.

Wendy Butler Berns Quilts

Aug 02 2002

The Duathalon by Wendy Butler Berns

The Duathalon by Wendy Butler Berns

Wendy Butler Berns was teaching at Quilt America! in Indianapolis, Indiana in July 2002. On July 26, two of her quilts were stolen from the classroom in the Indianapolis Convention Center. The classroom had been locked while everyone went to lunch, but someone was able to gain entrance and took the quilts off the table.

The quilt shown above, The Duathalon, is an origial design was taken from a picture of her son in a bike race. The 40-1/2″ by 44-1/2″ wall hanging is machine pieced, machine quilted. The label includes the original photo, a description of how the quilt was made, along with Wendy’s name and address. The label is hand appliqued to the back.

Ever-Evolving Nine Patch by Wendy Butler Berns

Ever-Evolving Nine Patch by Wendy Butler Berns

The Ever-Evolving Nine Patch, shown below, is also an original design. It consists of squares fo fabric falling through space creating first tradtional Nine Patch blocks and then a funky Nine Patch. It is 42″ by 41-1/2″ and was made in January 2000. The main background fabric is a dark blue hand-dyed fabric that looks like a night sky. The blocks are turquoise blues and lime greens. It is machine appliqued and machine quilted. It is embellished with programmed stitches using hologram thread. A detail of the quilting is shown below.

The label says, “All life began from lots of bits and pieces, so too has quilting. The nine-patch has existed since the art of quilting began, but even with this tradition, there is room for change. As the 9 patch twists and weaves its way through time and space, it evolves from straight even patches to curved and wavy patches. This new nine-patch now has a visual sense of movement and energy within its original square space.” The label is hand appliqued to the lower center back of the quilt.

Missing Grandmother’s Quilt

Apr 12 2002

Julia Herwehe is searching for a full-size quilt made by her grandmother, Grace Spoon. The quilt is an original design consisting of three rectangles sewn lengthwise to complete one block. These blocks are set alternately with a plain block in between. The quilt is made with scraps and the middle rectangle of each block is a multicolor polka dot fabric. It was hand pieced and hand quilted in the late 1960′s or early 1970′s. There was a piece of paper pinned to it which says, “Grace Spoon for her granddaughter Julie Vaughn” and the date. This was the last quilt her grandmother made and she was in her 90′s.

Julia last saw the quilt in her home in the early 1990′s. She believes the quilt was sold to an antique dealer or flea market dealer in central Indiana. Please contact Julia if you can help her recover this quilt. You can reach her at flamingoweh@aol.com.

Indiana Sunbonnet Sue

Nov 20 2001

Sunbonnet Sue by Helen Brown

Sunbonnet Sue by Helen Brown

Please be on the lookout for a Sunbonnet Sue quilt similar to the ones shown here. Nancy Timpe’s childhood quilt, made by her grandmother Helen Mezger Reimer Brown, has been missing since the mid to late 1980s. The quilt shown here is her sister’s, also made by their grandmother.

Nancy last saw her quilt in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her grandmother was going to mend it and she gave it to a friend who was going to help her. That friend passed it on to some other friends, all of them elderly but all who wanted to help. By the time Nancy realized the quilt was out of her grandmother’s possession, some of the friends had died and their estates were sold at auction. It is possible that Nancy’s quilt was sold at the estate auction of the “Kegley Sisters,” Dot Stewart and Floss Robinson in the early 1990s. They lived in Johnson County, Indiana on Smokey Row Road near Morgantown Road. However in November 2001, relatives of the Kegley sisters contacted Nancy to report that they do not remember a quilt fitting this description at the auction. So, the search for Nancy’s quilt continues.

The quilt has 35 Sunbonnet Sues, five across and seven down. It fits a full size bed with a dust ruffle or a twin size without. Each “Sue” is on a white background. The sashing, border and backing is pink. Sue’s dresses are made from fabric left over from Nancy’s childhood clothing and each bonnet is decorated differently, some with embroidery. It is hand appliqued, hand pieced and hand quilted. The quilt was made in the late 1950s. The quilt shown here is nearly identical to Nancy’s quilt.

Please contact Nancy at nancytimpe@hotmail.com if you have any information about this quilt. Nancy is willing to buy back her quilt at a fair price plus a $50 finder’s fee.

Red, Yellow and White Turkey Track

Jan 19 2000

Turkey Tracks

Turkey Tracks

This treasured family heirloom was stolen from Marcy Kenyons New York City apartment about five years ago (1995). They believe the thief probably used it to wrap the other items they were stealing, not knowing how priceless the quilt really was.

This quilt was made in 1961 by Bessie Beulah Kenyon in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was made for her son and wife who were the owners father and mother. It is a double bed size. She used a red and yellow print fabric with a white background to make her Turkey Track pattern, shown to the right. It has a tremendous amount of quilting, white on white. At the time of the theft it was in excellent conditions. There was no label or signature.

If anyone has seen a quilt that fits this description, please contact mjkenyon@aol.com.
