Susan Plack Quilts

Nov 03 2003

“Talk about a surreal set of circumstances,” writes Susan Plack. “I packed up our van when we were concerned about having to evacuate because of the (California) fires, and when we unpacked, the bag of quilts was put in the pile of things to donate to fire victims by mistake.” Now Susan needs your help recovering these missing quilts! They were last seen on October 31, 2003 at the St. Vincent de Paul warehouse in San Deigo, California where they were accidentally donated with other clothing items.

California Lighthouses is an original quilt features twelve California lighthouses around the Star of India clipper ship. It is about 80″ by 80″. The blocks are set in an Attic Windows variation. The back of the quilt also has a large window. It is hand appliqued, machine pieced, hand quilted and has silk ribbon embroidery. The quilting is not complete and it does not have a label yet.

Southern California Missions is a 70″ by 80″ original design that features local missions. There is a trail that connects the blocks. The quilt top is hand appliqued and machine pieced and the names of the missions are embroidered, but it is not completed yet. There is a label on the front on a mission sign.

San Diego Victorians is a 70″ by 80″ quilt that was created from photos of Victorian houses. The photo shows only the top two rows of houses. This top is hand pieced and hand appliqued with some silk ribbon embroidery but not yet quilted or labeled.

Jesse’s Graduation Quilt is a 120″ by 120″ quilt that features t-shirts in an attic window setting. The blocks have white backgrounds with t-shirts appliqued on top. This quilt also features blue jeans, twill pants fabric, band patches, clothing tags and signature blocks. It is machine pieced and machine appliqued and not yet layered or quilted. A label in one of the attic windows on the front says, “Jesse, Rock on!” The photo shows the start of the back of the missing graduation quilt, showing an example of fabrics and designs.

Below are also four blocks that were also accidentally sent to the thrift store. Each block is an original design based on photos taken by Susan. Each block is 17″ square. In order, they are a Miner’s Cabin in Canada, Dungaire Castle in Ireland, a Japanese building, and the Taj Mahal.

If you have seen any of these quilts or blocks, please contact Susan through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

State Flower Quilt

Mar 19 2003

A State Flower quilt made by Janet M. Beebe was lost in 1989 during a move from Monterey, California to Norfolk, Virginia. The Beebe’s were using Advance Moving Service but their name was not on the box containing the quilt so it could not be traced.

Janet used Aunt Martha’s State Flower hot iron transfers to make her embroidered quilt in 1976. Each block has an embroidered picture of the state flower and a scroll with the name of the state. The quilt is about 56″ by 72″. The main fabrics used are natural muslin and light green broadcloth. There is a simple rose design on the green blocks and the quilt has a fan pattern on the edges. “Jan” is embroidered in black floss on one of the bottom corners of the backing.

Please contact Janet through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page if you have seen a quilt that matches this description.

Lotus Block

Jan 17 2003

Lotus Block by Kathleen Pappas

Lotus Block by Kathleen Pappas

Kathleen Pappas has misplaced one of her five Lotus blocks. Kathleen designed these blocks from a drawing she made from a photograph. Then she fractured the drawing to create her pattern. Each piece required a template and it was a very difficult piecing process.

The missing block was bordered and backed so she could use it as a sample to teach a class based on Ruth McDowell’s “Pieced Flowers” book. It measures 18″ by 24″ with the borders. The actual block is 12″ by 18″. The main colors are greens and pinks. She used many hand dyed fabrics including some from Sky Dyes. It was machine pieced in 1998. The block shown here is not the one that is missing, but it is made from the same templates. The fabrics will vary on the missing block.

Kathleen’s block was last seen in 2000 at a quilt shop in Lake Forest, California. That day, Kathleen had brought home a stack of quilts which should have included this block. She didn’t notice until much later that it was missing. The quilt shop was searched thoroughly to see if it had fallen behind a display or a piece of furniture, but it was not found.

Kathleen writes, “Since it was small and not quilted, perhaps it was picked up or stuck to someone else’s quilt when they took quilts home from the shop.” If you have seen this block, please contact Kathleen through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.

Noah’s Ark Quilt

Jan 10 2003

Dinah's Quilt by Valorie Klinefelter

Dinah's Quilt by Valorie Klinefelter

On December 28, 2002 Valorie Klinefelter sent her granddaughter a gift for her first birthday. Valorie sent the Noah’s Ark Quilt, but it was never delivered. The quilt was last seen at the Cascade Park Station in Vancouver, Washington. It was being mailed to Ontario, California. It was packaged in a sturdy box with a bright orange address label which was protected by 2″ wide, clear packaging tape.

The crib sized quilt is made from a printed panel depicting Noah’s ark in bright green, pink, orange, blue and yellow. Valorie personalized it by adding prairie points on all four edges. She used a matching fabric, below, for the backing. Additional details of the quilt are shown below. It is very heavily machine quilted with Sulky invisible thread on the front and white Metrosene cotton on the back.

If you have any information about this quilt, please contact Valorie through the Lost Quilt Come Home Page.
